Mar. 27, 2006 If Ken Hughes has truly left Useless Knowledge for good, then he’ll never read this particular post. So I feel very comfortable in saying goodbye and good riddance, amigo. I’m not celebrating Ken’s departure. Actually, I hate to see him go. Misspellings and grammatical problems notwithstanding, Ken always stood firm in his beliefs. And despite our differences in political thinking, we’ve maintained a friendly, respectful relationship. But those of you who are relatively new to Useless Knowledge may not be aware that this isn’t Ken’s first goodbye from the site. Since I started contributing, back in May of 2004, Ken has left and come back at least twice. There’s nothing wrong with taking a break every now and again to recharge and refresh, but the departures didn’t have anything to do with recharging and refreshing. They had to do with some of the same things that have compelled Ken to leave yet again. Ken’s not the first victim of a personal attack on this site. To a certain degree, most of the regulars—Michelle Malsbury, Michael John McCrae and Judy Ramsook among them—have had to weather that storm. Rookie columnist Dawn Carr learned the hard way that it takes fortitude and stamina to write op-ed. She didn’t have either one and that’s why she’s no longer here. So if Ken Hughes really hasn’t left Useless Knowledge and happens to be reading this, here’s a toast to your prolific portfolio and to your willingness to share what’s been on your mind. I’ve benefited greatly from it, and I appreciate it. Now, take Useless Knowledge out of your favorites, grab yourself a thick T-bone steak, a hearty helping of french-fried potatoes and a cold beer, and go enjoy yourself.
