Ken Hughes: Toodle-oo, Pilgrim!

By Timothy N. Stelly, Sr.
Mar. 27, 2005

Ken Hughes was “The Grand Old Man” of Useless Knowledge. However, I won’t hop on this bandwagon that is laden with those who suddenly sing his praises. While many state they admire Ken for his “honesty,” it is the same trait which betrayed him. While he has always been lambasted for his poor spelling, he has excoriated others for of all things skin color, and there are too many examples for me to waste time citing.

I must respectfully disagree with Bonijean Isaac comment, “(Ken) has always been a positive contributor to the Useless Knowledge Magazine.” Ken has written many columns that were outright vitriolic and insulting to black people. These columns were not honest debate mind you, but intentionally offensive diatribes that would raise a Klansman’s eyebrow. He has called blacks ignorant, thieves, pimps, etc. He cries because he is condemned on a personal basis, but he takes malicious swipes at an entire race.

Harsh attacks were one of the things that drew me to the site. I saw that UK is like playground basketball; you can’t drive to the hoop and just throw up anything. You have to bring your “A” game—assuming you have one. You better know how to play the game, or risk being shut down—then shamed by trash talking.

Don’t get me wrong, Ken has provided me with some good resources and many of his columns are well-thought out—even if I do disagree with 95% of them. But this “poor pink me” lament (a play on Ken’s favorite accusation of blacks: We’re content to cry “poor black me”) is downright laughable. I say pat the old fella on his head, give him a cookie and put him to bed. I congratulate Ken for his prolific tenure, but he has chosen to say “gud buy”—oops, I meant “goodbye.” That’s one point I won’t argue with him.

It is one thing to be strongly opinionated, and another to be ignorant and intolerant. In my view, Ken falls into the latter hole. But rest easy, my fellow Ukies—Ken isn’t leaving UK. Like the drunk, ugly girl at a party he’s looking for a little sympathy. Another beer or two and he’ll be all too eager to drop his drawers and settle for the illusion of being loved.

He has you all to thank for both.
