Mar. 27, 2006 So, Ken says he's leaving the site. I for one hope he stays, even though I have and have had issues with the guy. I can't help but criticize him, even though he often shows a keen political insight. Ken is upset that folks attack his spelling and grammar, and then lists other reasons. I just misspelled grammar, I first spelled it, “grammer”, but by the magic of this FREE word processor, OpenOffice Writer, it put a bunch of squiggly red lines underneath and I simply right-clicked and picked the correct spelling (all modern word processors do this). Anyway, the other reasons given, the personal insults and so forth has many at uk “guilty”, including Ken Hughes himself. I've written about this before after the last heated exchange I found myself in with Ken. Soon after, Ken moderated his tone. We email occasionally, I'm on one of his email lists and I do respond when he contacts me, but more about civility later. First, the schoolyard bully analogy. This is the virtual world, folks. Physical strength is meaningless and we have no direct power over each other. If the Editor considered asking Tom to quite writing insulting articles against Ken, then it would seem that Ken actually has some power OVER Tom, wouldn't it? No on here cuts in front of you in the drinking fountain line, no one picks you last for sports teams in gym, no one takes away your lunch money. Can we please stop with the bully analogies already? I've had my turn battling Tom Pain, lol, and we now understand each other much better. We still have drastically opposing political views, but we can now be civil with each other. I know many would disagree with me, but I kind of like articles with a bit of sting – it gets people worked up, and I dare say, that's exactly what the apathetic American public needs – a fire under their collective asses. I keep hearing that the reason we don't have mass street protests and the like, even at “liberal” colleges, is because we don't have a draft. How selfish is that? Folks, if you don't like the war, put on a bandanna and march in the street! Block an intersection or something for God's sake! ;) Do some jail time for breaking little laws – it might even change your views of the “lock 'em up LONGER and LONGER and LONGER” mentality that our criminal justice system now has. Now, some criticism. Ken is quite adept himself at dishing out the insults, he just doesn't always see his writing as insulting, for, certainly, we all know that humanists and atheist are sub-human, loony, fringe types, yes? All Liberals are stupid communists, etc., etc. I've also written about Ken's view of god(s). Depending on his mood, he's both a devout believer and an agnostic. He'll easily jump on the “I don't know what God is” bandwagon and then turn around and defend specific Biblical issues. Even in his goodbye letter, he manged to negatize [not a real world] evolution... He also seems like a racist to me - I once wrote an article where I asked Ken to commit ritual suicide ;) in response. Sorry, Kenneth, you do inspire those kind of responses from time to time... In any case, I wish Ken would keep writing articles that slam liberals – liberals need to get worked up and fight back. He sometimes writes clever pieces, and there's certainly a place for him here, in this virtual world. Stay, Ken. Don't worry about saving face – no one cares about that, just write a response slamming me or something and we can all go on being happy :) MAC, Skip and Meri all said they would leave - they all stayed. Join that crowd and be happy. And, when you get up to go get a drink, realize that neither Tom nor anyone else can jump in front of you and grab the last beer from your fridge (but I would suggest not drinking until AFTER you've submitted the article...). That was a joke, relax. Finally, let me add that I don't believe for a second that it's these kinds of “disagreements” which makes useless-knowledge look bad. Many blogs are extremely partisan and insulting – it's the nature of the biz at the moment. ------------ About the author Frederick Smith: I enjoy writing about the positive virtues of humanism - humanists are the good guys. I now have a blog that I will start to increasingly maintain and update. Here is the link: fredsuberview.blogspot.com/ About my personal background and life: I was born, I got some education, worked, ate, and had some kids. It seems I like to write something that was unknown to me until relatively recently...How's that for detail? ;) Hate mail is welcome unless you are from the Army Of God. Please! It's not that I mind seeing pictures of aborted fetuses in my inbox, but once you've seen one you've pretty much seen them all...
