Mars To Release "Healthy" Chocolate

By Kaycee Nilson
Mar. 22, 2006

The Mars Candy Company recently announced a new product, CocoaVia. Now, before my fellow chocaholics, before you get too excited over a product that lays claim to lower cholesterol and increases cardiovascular health, remember that Mars paid for the study.

The truth is that in order to obtain the necessary plant sterols, you have to consume two portions of CocoaVia per day or 200 calories and 36% of the daily-recommended limit for saturated fat.

You won’t find this new candy in the candy aisle, you will, however. Find it in the health food section.

And now for Kaycee’s take on healthy chocolate. Even though it might be healthy for you the darker the chocolate, 36% of the saturated fat per day in this new candy bar, makes me realize that you have to workout for 45 more minutes in your daily routine.

Plus it tastes like chocolate covered cardboard. Now don’t get me wrong, I love dark chocolate, Dove in my opinion is the best. But this new CocoaVia tastes more like a cigarette butt.

Plus with my limited mobility, why would I eat something that needs to have 45 minutes extra exercise when I am only allowed 10 minutes on my feet at a time and then I am in the bed for an hour?

Plus Mars is not the only candy manufacturer that is coming out with this “healthy” chocolate.

Now, upon further investigation, these chemical sterols come in capsule form and cost less than these new candy bars plus you don’t get the extra calories. So here are the benefits and there are no extra calories that you have to add 45 minutes a day extra workout.

Sterols can lower cholesterol, relax one’s blood vessels and help ward off heart disease. If you eat this candy and don’t add extra exercises to your lifestyle, you will end up gaining 20 pounds a year according to a study by Harvard Nutritionists back in February.

So my question is, does dark chocolate really have anti-oxidents? Also if any of you readers have read this column and tried some of the new “healthy” chocolate, please write me and tell me what you think of the taste. I’ll run a poll for the next two months and then you will get the results.

Happy eating!
