The Butterfly Landed

By Kaycee Nilson
Mar. 20, 2006

My oldest child and only daughter spent her spring break from school with me this past week. She inspired me to put out some of my best work I think I have put out since she left me about a year ago.

We had fun just hanging out together and spending time getting to know each other again. I could tell she had regrets over the way that she left. Needless to say, the brothers were happy she was here. I forgot what it was like to have another estrogen in the house when I have had to get adjusted to the surroundings of testosterone.

It was big fun looking through wedding magazines and watching the wedding stuff on On-Demand. Settling on colors and what style of wedding we want. Then the most important piece of the wedding dress appeared and my Butterfly helped me to try it on. It is so pretty, it's a French blue corset with different colors embroidered in flowers.

Then something happened. We missed her flight out of Chicago back to Texas where she lives with her father and now she can't leave until Friday when she has a ticket at Amtrak. So I get another week with my Butterfly!

Soon you will see pictures of me with my columns as we are about to take some shots that are different than my website and with my new hair color and style. My Butterfly helped me to color mine and I helped her with hers, now I'm a redhead with strawberry blonde highlights and she's neon blue with red highlights. I wanted to do her hair green and purple for "Riddle Box," by ICP.

The baby nearly tackled her when we reappeared after trying to get her on a later flight. The middle and oldest son was nearly crying to see her again and especially when he realized that she would have to spend another week with us. Even Stewart winded his way around her legs.

We were both upset over not only the fact that she will be missing a week of school, and even more disappointed that the NASCAR Cup Race was rain delayed until Monday, March 20, 2006. But at least we can sit on my bed and watch it together just as we would have done on Sunday.

Now I am struggling with the feeling of elation with the feeling of having to grieve when she leaves and dealing with the boys and her leaving once again by train. The baby isn't going to understand one bit. The oldest son understands that she is here for just a short time, but that doesn't mean that he is going to hurt any less when she does leave. Even Stewart is going to go through a sense of loss.

Ever since she's been here, it's like a breathe of nice spring air hit the house and a life force of it's own developed. The baby couldn't wait to show her all he's learned since she's been gone. But he's going to freak when she leaves. I may not even take him to the train station for I know the pain of watching her walk through that door and climbs aboard the "Texas Star" train.

I know she will return, but it's not easy for a mother to know that she cannot reach out and hug her child when she wants. "The Butterfly Landed"
