![]() By Jack Lepiarz Mar. 19, 2006 Most people lead two lives. On one hand, they have their public life. Who they are on the outside and what kind of image that they would like to project. That is their public image. They act differently, speak differently, maybe even look differently to create someone that they want people to see them as. Then, on the other hand, you have their personal image. Who a person really is. What goes on in the inner workings of their minds or the most intimate details of their personal life. Romance, family matters, and feuds with other individuals are all things that fit into this category. In other words, things that are usually left best unsaid. Not all people have those two personas. Eminem is famous for bringing his personal life into his music. Many people often use their public outlet--whether it be television, radio, or writing, as a way to express their emotions. They might discuss how they're going through a divorce, or how frustrated they get with people at work, etc. I do that as well. However, I try not to go into extremely intimate details in any of my public projects--whether it be an article for Useless Knowledge, or a podcast on Uth TV, or even a show with the Super Scientific Circus. I adopt a new persona and--if an emotion is particularly strong--may express it slightly. However, I still work hard to keep a specific reputation--one that is sarcastic, youthful, and otherwise relaxed. However, when I write for myself (by which I mean a novel), I say anything and everything that I please. I wrote an entire novel on pure emotion, using it to fuel my characters and put life into their own emotions. I don't have to censor myself because, technically, it's not me saying whatever comes out of the character's mouth (although if it came out of the narrator's mouth, you can bet I've probably said at some point). That, and I know that chances are that this novel will never see print--literary agents and publishers (though not always) tend to shy away from manuscript queries from 17-year-old boys. I kept a journal during my early teen years, but found that I could never really express myself and really put my feelings onto the paper. I was too terrified of someone coming along and reading my inner thoughts. I tried various experiments. I wrote in invisible ink, I tried writing in code, everything to make it seem like what I was saying was safe. Now, I still keep a journal, only it lies surrounded by over 100 pages of pure, unadulterated fiction. Writing novels helps me to ease whatever tension I might have inside me. Though the words that come out of Ethan Shepherd's mouth have also escaped my lips, I can feel secure in knowing that it's not really me saying the words, and that makes it a little safer. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go work on my novel. ------------ About the author: Jack Lepiarz is a senior at Madison High School.
