9 Trillion Is Congresses Budget Not George Bush's

By Ken Hughes
Mar. 18, 2006

In reviewing the budget several things jumped out at me. There’s a region in the African Sudan called Darfur. People have been starving and murdered for a generation. The UN has had peace keepers there forever and no peace has been kept. The Unites States Congress, [not to be confused with President Bush] is suggesting 50 million dollars for peace keeping efforts in the Darfur region. It sounds like a noble cause, right? The Darfur region has a population of 7 million [+ / -] starving soles. If my math is correct that’s 7.14 dollars per starving sole to assure the people of Darfur will continue to suffer and starve but be secure as they do so. Is this ridiculous or what..??

The two largest expenditures in the budget are security and entitlements. Let’s go to entitlements first, can anyone tell me where in the constitution it authorizes congress to budget for entitlements. The constitution explicitly prohibits the federal government from taking on things that aren’t written in. All matters not addressed in the constitution are given over to the states, [States Rights.]

Now’s not the time to discuss Homeland Security and it’s miss expenditures. That’s far to complicated an issue to be included with this litany of issues.

If Congress followed the laws as prescribed by the constitution the federal government would be reduced by more than half. If the courts interpreted law as apposed to making law from the bench domestic America would be more secure, less crime and better educated. It’s the pseudo-intellectuals who’ve never experienced what they propose to know all the answers to that create even greater problems.

The constitution gives the president the right to veto any legislation he deems inappropriate. I’m guessing this president assumes in the end congress will be held accountable for the financial conditions of the country therefore sees no need for a veto. In a way he’s right, George Bush has less than three years left to serve as President. When the rubber hits the road as it eventually will congress will be left to clean up the mess. Many senators have been around for over a quarter of a century. It would seem to me they would have had it all worked out by now and wouldn’t need to rely on a president to do the right thing. This is how it works, presidents submit budgets, and congress works them over adding and subtracting, with more adding than subtracting. Then the president has the option of signing off on the budget or rejecting it. Congress usually lets the approval process for the budget get down to the final wire leaving no negotiating room. If a budget isn’t approved on time it sets off a whole new batch of problems in motion.

The American public has become so accustomed to entitlements they assume this is the purpose of the government. In reality it’s another form of Socialism, it’s redistributing the nation’s wealth one dollar or one trillion dollars at a time. The government only has one place to acquire money, from the people. I’m sure if the average person were ask if they wanted to raise someone else’s children they would chose to adopt and not get the government involved. I’m not suggesting the infirmed the weak and those truly less fortunate be brushed aside. That’s a states rights obligation not the federal government. For those who say the states can’t afford the burden, I say if the federal government didn’t bleed the states and the people dry everyone could afford more.

There’s a thing in the budget called Pork Barrel Spending I prefer to call it bartering pet projects for votes. Nearly every congress man and woman has their hand in the barrel, some deeper than others. Their explanation is it’s only a small part of the budget. Added up over the years it may make a huge dent in the 9 trillion deficit they’re talking about.

I’m not suggesting you call or write you congress person that’s never successful. What I am suggesting is engage the new candidates running for office in the fall. Get some commitment from them. Assure them if they aren’t committed to a better less intrusive less extravagant America it will be one term and out.

Two more intrusive ism’s are accountable for the magnitude of the federal budget. Political Correctness and Liberal Politics, change those and the county will be far better off.
