Pat Robertson: Overstepping The Bounds--Again

By Jack Lepiarz
Mar. 14, 2006

This past summer, Pat Robertson, host of ABC Family's "The 700 Club" and the founder of the Christian Coalition, made several comments along the lines of saying that America should assassinate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Several months later, he attributed Ariel Sharon's stroke to God's "divine retribution." In other words, Sharon was being punished by God for pulling out of the Gaza Strip. Although he promptly apologized for both statements, it is clear that Robertson still has not learned his lesson.

Now, determined as ever to fan the flames of hatred, Pat Robertson has denounced Islam as a violent religion, and called radical Muslims "satanic." He said that the reaction by Muslims to the Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed "just shows the kind of people we're dealing with. These people are crazed fanatics, and I want to say it now: I believe it's motivated by demonic power. It is satanic, and it's time we recognize what we're dealing with." he also made other comments denouncing Islam, saying that, "the goal of Islam, ladies and gentlemen, whether you like it or not, is world domination."

Not unlike the Christian Crusades and the thousands of missionaries that, to this day, try to convert nearly everyone they meet (Jehovah's Witness anyone?), even waiting outside of schools in an attempt to convert young people.

In a time when political and religious tensions between the Middle East and the West are already soaring, Pat Robertson has to go and say something like this. Furthermore, this is not the first time that Robertson has made comments along these lines. In 2002, he said (also on "The 700 Club"), "[Islam] is not a peaceful religion that wants to coexist. They want to coexist until they can control, dominate and then, if need be, destroy."

Many people often say that we help the enemy by questioning our president. Personally, I believe that we help them a whole lot more by saying stuff like this. By calling them satanic, you only incite them to fight even more. Rev. Barry Lynn, the executive director for the Americans United for Separation of Church and State, openly denounced Robertson's blatantly irresponsible remarks. "At a time when inter-religious tensions around the world are at an all-time high, Robertson seems determined to throw gasoline on the fire."

As a responsible Christian and follower of Jesus Christ, Pat Robertson should be preaching love and understanding, not hate and anger. Jesus Christ taught his followers to love their neighbor. Apparently, Pat Robertson has strayed away from that teaching-again.
