Mar. 14, 2006 “1Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation. 2Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray. 3My voice shall thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.” (Psalm 5: 1-3) The Apostle Paul admonished his listeners to “Pray without ceasing.” Prayer sustains the believer. There are not only admonitions but there are detailed instructions in some places and help with questions on what should and should not be incorporated into out prayers. King David asked the Lord countless times to “hear” or “give ear” and “consider” his requests. God labeled David a man whom he loved. God forgave many of David’s sins and made a few important promises that reach even to this modern age. Christians that are faithful to prayer will know to speak to God with the last words of their day and to speak with God using their first words upon waking. No man is guaranteed any single day of life. God is the maker and keeper of all life and deserves recognition for each soul standing. “4For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee. 5The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hate all workers of iniquity. 6Thou shall destroy them that speak leasing: the LORD will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.” (Psalm 5: 4-7) Yes, God is a god of love. He loved David more than he deserved. God judged David for his crimes against men and David repented of his crimes and received his promises. But know that God “hates” all workers of iniquity and he will “destroy” these workers neglecting repentance because “evil” will not dwell where God is. “7But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple. 8Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face.9For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulcher; they flatter with their tongue.” (Psalm 5:7-9) Here is David’s repentant heart. He says he will come to God’s mercy and he asks for the direction and path of God. He asks God for help in his walk because of his enemies. They are wicked and unfaithful and full of flattery without action. It’s all words without meaning. “10Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against thee.” (Psalm 5:10) I wonder sometimes about these prayers of David. Paul wrote that everything in the Old Testament is there for a purpose. The purpose is instruction and admonition that we not fail as our forefathers failed. Is it okay for a Christian to pray for the complete destruction of his enemies? David does qualify the method of destruction in allowing the wicked to “fall by their own counsels” because of their “rebellion”. So I guess this is a proper approach. If there is only transgression, rebellion and wickedness it might be wise to pray for the destruction of these types of enemies. They will fall by their own counsels anyway; we may not need to push that in prayer. God is judge and we could just as easily leave the wicked to their own and let God sort it out in judgment. This is not the only prayer of David asking God to “destroy” his enemies though. “11But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defend them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. 12For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favor wilt thou compass him as with a shield.” We already know that if we are in the Lord we can rejoice and never fear enemies or their attacks. God’s blessings are sure and his protection is as a “shield”. I suppose we could pray for the destruction of our enemies, but we should be praying for their salvation which is the better course. Not only do we heap “coals of fire” on those that persecute us as we pray for them, but should our prayers produce salvation through the Spirit of God then we “destroy” them in another way. The old, evil, wicked; man that they were will have become the “new” man. Just remember to pray Christian. Pray for the salvation of your enemies or pray for their destruction. God will hear and either bless your prayer or direct it as it needs to be spoken. In any case I believe God will have the last word. ------------ Email Skip: skiptoomaloo@hotmail.com Comment on this article here! ------------ All articles are EXCLUSIVE to Useless-Knowledge.com.
