Thoughts On Writing

By Brian Michael Barbeito
Mar. 14, 2006

Folding my Adi Da article neatly into a paper airplane and sailing it across the room, I wondered what makes a writer and what causes writers’ block. I thought that a writer’s job was to be a note taker for his/her time. But the small writer gets lost in the mass media. Who cares? And who cares about a fiction writer? The idea of having a political cause is much better than, well, not having one. Then there is a topic that the writer can feel passionate about, research, and argue about, et cetera. Another great type of writer is a good old-fashioned journalist. Someone covering a story. When linked up with the outside world through a political cause or a news item, there is that outward, well, link.

If you write from your own personal vision of reality, it is simply crazy. You have parleyed your experience with reality into some form of art, good or bad, and managed to package it. But how did they do it time and time again? The greats that is. Well many of them didn’t do it without a hitch. Drugs, alcohol, madness. Baudelaire writes, ‘ I have felt the wind of the wing of madness.’ Nice, but frightening. Who would really want to write anyway? My personal thought has always been that a writer is someone who something has gone terribly wrong for. That is my big original thought, and its not too original I suppose. I mean, writing has been fun, and it is a good outlet, but I for one, would never have thought of being a writer or reading books. Especially since I was a hockey player.

So where is the column going? That paper airplane that sailed across the room was a column that has some alright information. I suppose people can write to inform, argue, boast, harm, enlighten, uplift, reconcile, deconstruct, construct, plagiarize, philosophize, surmise, condone, explore, visualize, patronize, propagate, belittle, bemoan, belly ache, cut up, put together, spew forth, regurgitate, proselytize, or course criticize, and so on and on. I wonder what Baudelaire would say????

Anyhow, other wonderful thoughts by yours truly involve novel writing. How does someone write a whole novel? Who makes such people? God? Circumstance? Determination? Where does the talent come from? This is why I am a proponent for reincarnation. I simply don’t understand how nature creates a novelist on one hand and a pipe fitter on the other. Another thing I thought of was that rational thinking often leads to clear rational writing, whereas mystical thinking leads to literary visions that most people don’t get save for a handful. If you talk about gravity, physics, and the natural world, you will not get much argument. If you talk about women with orange time in their eyes and quiet dusk handfuls of dreaming leaves, people will go, ‘Huh?’
