Mar. 12, 2006 Some folks are characterized as loose cannons rolling around the deck of an old man-o-war sailing ship, bashing into things and in danger of going off and blasting a hole in the vessel they are supposed to be defending. John McCain is worse than that. He's a bad-tempered jerk, capable of explosing and sending shrapnel into the Republican Party, his party, and into the United States of America, his country. He has no basic conservative fiscal principles, being a big tax guy. Ronald Reagan wouldn't have claimed him. He often speaks ill of his fellow Republicans. Ronald Reagan, the man who said to avoid speaking ill of your own party members, wouldn't have claimed him. He is often simply petty and ill-tempered. I recall his crass remarks to Arnold Schwarzenegger's wife as she was trying to get an interview with him after one of his political losses. But his latest caper is even more revealing. He was supposed to be a candidate in a southern Republican straw poll, and he was supposed to be the front-runner. At which point he was all in favor of this straw poll when it looked as though he would win. But when the early buzz was that Bill Frist was going to be the winner, McCain changed his tune and suddenly was telling everybody to "write in President Bush's name, as he's the wartime commander and he's the only one we should be supporting." Ah, yes, I get it! It was OK to be running the straw poll as long as McCain was winning. It was OK to push policies that were contrary to President Bush's when McCain is trying to cement his position as the darling of the media. But when McCain is losing the straw poll, President Bush suddenly deserves his support! Quite disingenuous. As if that were not evidence enough of that McCain is a hindrance to Republican conservative ideas, one only has to note that Ellen Ratner loves him! It is an infallible rule that one should not vote for the candidate favored by your opponents. ------------ About the author Brooks A.
