Thoughts On This "Burden Of Proof"

By Jack Lepiarz

One question atheists often pose to Christians is "Where does God come from?" Christians often have a variety of answers. Sometimes, they don't have an answer, and in the true spirit of a politician, go off on a subject completely unrelated to the question. The most common response, however, is that God just IS. He exists, always has existed, and will always exist. He is omnipotent and controls all aspects of the universe.

My response to that statement is usually along the lines of "If God simply exists, why can't we?" Unfortunately, that kind of logic does not work, and I often get some blanket response like "Don't let Satan lead you into that kind of thinking."

Lovely.

Many people waste their breath in pathetic attempts to prove the existence of God. It's not something that can logically or scientifically proven. One columnist on U-K tried used this logic: "The Christian does not need to prove God. That the Christian exists is proof enough."

I understand that this columnist wasn't trying to prove God's existence in his article, but ended up making an argument for it--intentionally or not. By his logic, the simple existence of the follower equates the existence of the deity. By that argument, we can logically discern that there is more than one god. In fact, by his logic, there are as many gods are there are religions on the planet (which I understand are quite a few).

One other point I'd like to address comes from the same article. The author says, "God does not need to prove any portion of his word to any believer. The believer knows the truth of scripture and the worth of that truth."

I disagree with that statement. Based on the sheer variety of interpretations of the Bible and of the dozens of Christian sects, I would say that God--if he exists--DOES in fact need to prove, or at least clarify, his word. If believers did actually know the truth of scripture, then there would not be Methodists, Catholics, Protestants, Baptists, Lutherans, etc.

But you see, such thinking along those lines is Satan trying to corrupt my mind. Or just common sense. My bet's on the latter of those two choices. Many people (not just Christians) use logic as a way to prove their God's existence. They might say that the simple existence of the world proves the existence of a creator, but as soon as you ask what created that creator (after all, all things must come from something), they say that your mind has been corrupted by Satan.

Am I the only one that finds that kind of thinking silly? Am I the only one that is disturbed by normal intelligent adults ignoring pure, unadulterated logic because it challenges their beliefs? I suppose the greater question here is whether or not I believe that I can accomplish anything through this article. I know that I will not. By the time they actually get to this point in my article, the "true believers," as they call themselves, will be hatching up a rebuttal to my logical argument.

Oh well.
