It Isn't Bush's Economy [It's Our Economy]

By Ken Hughes
Mar. 9, 2006

Two very different articles appeared on UK in recent days running counter to each other regarding the economy. There may be a speck of truth in both articles however for the most part each misses the bigger picture. Presidents don’t create or control economies congress has more influence on the economy than any president ever has. Congress approves trade treaties, makes laws governing business practices etc. President rarely get involved aside from taking credit for the good times. Eventually it’s the public who’re responsible for the ups and downs the economy takes. Public confidence in the conditions of the country’s what determines the direction the times go in more so than the actions of the president.

When we fill our closets, houses, and garages with cheaper foreign made goods, American workers making similar products suffer. If the public is willing to sacrifice American jobs to save a few pennies on each purchase how’s that the president fault? If shirt company “X” makes the decision to close its plants in America and buy shirts made in India or some other Pacific rime country and the publics willing to buy them how’s that the presidents fault? If a president, any president were to interfere in the workings of commercial ventures he’d most likely be called up for impeachment. Only congress can get involved in such matters as we’re seeing in the Dubai Port World deal.

President Bush came to Washington riding on a white horse named Civility it only took a few weeks for Liberals to eat his horse. They’ve been picking at the bones since. Congress and the public have a responsibility to see this Republic survives. It can’t happen if one man [the president] is held accountable and the rest of the 300 millions are left to their own devices. In order for freedom to survive and the nation to prosper it takes hard work and responsibility by every American citizen.

We have a congress predominantly in their sunset years with a philosophy buried in yesterday’s technologies and a president dragging them reluctantly into the 21st century. For as long as I can remember this country has been on the brink of disaster, or so say our leaders. America is the most prospers nation on earth. We waste more than half the nations in the world have. People risk life, limb, and their worldly goods to come to America. Our Southern neighbors risk their lives for the opportunity to become third class Americans citizens. Those fortunate enough to be born American aren’t satisfied they expect more from their president and their government than its able to give. John F. Kennedy words are long forgotten “Ask not what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your country,” those words ring hollow today.

It took 17 years from the day Attucks Crispus and his fellow Bostonians were shot by British Soldiers beginning the Revolutionary War and the signing of documents ending the War for Independence. The founding fathers and George Washingtons soldiers had more patience than the average American has today. Impatience often leads to inaccurate assumptions.

Mr. Gelbart says the conditions leading to the great depression of 1929 were the government’s deficits there was no deficit in 1929. This of course is a false statement. In 1929 an over inflated unregulated stock market and opportunistic bankers were at fault for the depression. Even then only 25% of the country was adversely affected. The newly elected Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the liberal agenda the government would follow for the next 70 years, with liberalism came deficits. Mr. Gelbart further states corporate profits are too high and they come at the expense of low wages being paid workers. American workers are some of the highest paid in the world. This is another false assumption Mr. Gelbart makes. Corporate profits can’t be judged by dollar amounts, they must be judged by percentage of production and gross income. Mr. Gelbart doesn’t understand free market economics.’ Corporations aren’t there to provide well paying jobs with exorbitant benefits to workers. Corporations are there to produce affordable products at reasonable prices and to earn profits for their stockholders.

Mr. Gelbart would have us believe everyone should share equally without regard for efforts extended. In a free market society weak character isn’t rewarded equally with hard work and determination. I can name a hundred men many were self educated who worked their way up from the bottom of the economic ladder to become icons in the world of business, All will say the same thing anyone can do it if they try.

Mr. Abraham may seem over zealous in his admiration of President Bush and his leadership in handling the economy. Presidents can only suggest and encourage those who actually manage the economy. First and foremost the public are the ones who make or brake the economic cycles we travel through. Mr. Abraham may have overstated some statistics by-in-large he’s nailed it on the economy. It’s the best this country has ever experienced.

Before a government can give they must first take. Excessive taxing by the government is about as close to pouring dollars into a bottomless pit as it gets.
