Mar. 8, 2006 The top United States Envoy stated recently that the taking Saddam Hussein out of power in Iraq has opened a “Pandora’s Box” of religious strife and the beginnings of a civil war. The United States Ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khallizad, has gone on record stating that if America pulls out now out of Iraq, a massive war may break out in the gulf region. So now we Americans have to be the police force of yet another country that is in turmoil. I still say for our forces to be brought home before anymore roadside bombs or religious zealots attack and kill any more Americans. For columns now, I have been following the activities in Iraq, and my opinion has not changed. If this is the beginning of a civil war, we need to pull our troops out before this turns into another Korea, Vietnam, Laos, and Panama. Do we need another generation that has nightmares of the horror and gore they witness in battle? This time, instead of just our young men, it is our young women as well that are fighting for the freedoms of a country that is no longer ruled by a dictator. Do we need to try to explain the reason why we are still there to children that loose their parents because of diplomats? Diplomats are what got our country in troubles in the first place. And the notion that war brings money into our economy is poppycock. What part of the economy gets rich off of war? Undertakers, funeral homes, and graveyards that’s who. I worry about petty things like trying to keep from moving the wrong way to cut off the nerves to my legs. I worry about school kids being surrounded by alcohol and tobacco ads around the schools here in Chicago. And all along, Jonathan is not far from my mind. Esp. his 4 year-old son is in the front of my thoughts at just about all sides. That kid adores his father and it would break me to learn that Jonathan died on his third tour of duty in Iraq. After watching Celebrity Fit Club 3, I say we give Jeff Conaway some Benedryl and send him over there, along with Gary Busey. And we pipe Eminem music across every loudspeaker in Iraq. Hey, if we can coax the coup leader out with the song “Safety Dance,” then we can coax peace with “My Name Is.” Let’s take a peek at the Grecian myth of “Pandora.” She was given to a religious man who made offerings to the gods and they sent him a beautiful woman named Pandora. Now Pandora came along with a beautiful golden box. The gods told her to never open the box. One day, curiosity killed her cat and she opened the box releasing upon mankind all sorts of maladies but she shut the lid before “Hope” could escape. Maybe the lesion to be learned from that is that every time another country is in turmoil and strife, here comes America like the “Hope” that was trapped inside the box. ------------ About the author: Kaycee Nilson has completed her first novel, "Night Falls on Chicago."
