Wal-Mart, Allopathic Contraceptives Pills And The Employment "Think" Test

By Bonijean Isaacs

Officials of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. announced the company will begin to stock emergency contraception Plan B pills in all of its pharmacies effective March 20. The pills were previously not stocked because the company's conscientious objection stance on abortion. Plan B Pills contains a higher dose of the hormones in regular birth control pills and reduces the chances of pregnancy of 72 hours of unprotected sex. Some abortion opponents oppose emergency contraception because it prevents an egg from fertilization and blocks an already fertilized egg from being implanted.

I can only speculate on rather Wal-Mart pharmacies will opt to carry the RU-486 "Mifepristone" Abortion pill which is a non surgical alternative to the termination of early trimester pregnancies. If they do, the motivation will be because of Insurance Companies and Pro-Choice activist groups. The Company is already facing numerous lawsuits because of questionable discriminatory business practices.

This brings me to another Wal-Mart Related topic. This is what I call the Wal-Mart "Think" test. I have on occasion applied for employment but have yet been able to get beyond the "Think" test. The question that makes me chuckle is "Marijuana is the same as Alcohol" Do you Agree or Disagree?

I am a long time teetotaler and I don't smoke wacky weed. These are my personal lifestyle choices. It is their business if somebody makes a different choice. I am opposed to anti-marijuana laws. They made as much sense as prohibition laws. Alcohol is not the same as Marijuana. Alcohol is worse than Marijuana. Nevertheless, if I ask this question honestly, the potential employer may conclude that I am a pot head.

Another question was, "If a co-worker smokes marijuana on their own time, it does not interfere with their work performance, the worker is tested for the drug with a positive result, does that worker deserve to be fired?" Dah! Should I really care what other people do on their own time. If a truck driver or a airplane pilot is a habitual drug user. I might be concerned. There is no real way to monitor a chronic alcoholic unless it affects their work performance which it eventually will. No, I don't think the Wal-Mart employee who stock shoes should be fired for smoking wacky weed on their own time. Nor should the gentleman in the sporting goods department who gets tanked out at the local tavern lose his job. Nevertheless, in my opinion it is their business. That opinion will keep me from getting hired at Wal-Mart.

A steady work history, Reliability, honesty, punctuality and consciousness are the qualities that I brought to past employers. These should be good enough for most employers. I wonder when Wal-Mart will include questions about RU-486 medications on the questionnaire. "If a woman uses the emergency contraception Plan B pills after a night of wild passion, and Wal-Mart finds out, does she deserve to be fired.?" Do you Agree or Disagree? Perhaps you are using the pill yourself. This will never be an issue with me. I had a tubal litigation in my mid thirties and my child bearing years are officially over. I prefer alternative medical solutions and lifestyle choices to avoid allopathic medications. In my opinion, a woman who used allopathic medications to opt not be become or continue a pregnancy should not be fired from her job. It's her business. Women may finally be able to purchase the allopathic contraceptive medications at Wal-Mart pharmacies but Women who makes their opinions known will most likely not t be hired by Wal-Mart. Perhaps women should opt not to shop at Wal-Mart.
