![]() By Judy Ramsook Mar. 4, 2006 Envy can be a terrible entity if you let it get to you and we have probably been a victim of it at some point in our lives. The object of this envy may not be anything complicated, it’s just that that one thing you have been working so hard to achieve all along is easily obtained by some one near and dear to you such as a relative or friend who has most likely not been persevering as diligently as you have been doing to achieve such a goal. So you congratulate that person, put on a happy face and move along, but in most Third World nations, the matter of envy might not be handled that well. In fact you can count yourself fortunate if you are successful and find people who are truly happy for you, for most people in Third World countries don’t like it if you are doing better than they are. There, envy is a serious matter. If you are successful, you are better off keeping that information to yourself and the few who are really happy for you, or keep a low profile. For others who are not happy for you and your success will go so far as to wish bad things to occur to you. You, the successful person can put aside their negative mentality and move along with life the best you can, but the day you suffer a small failure in life and word of it reaches those who are envious of you, they will feel as if they have scored a small victory. In a First World nation such as America, one might hardly hear of such happenings. Why? Mainly because in a progressive, First World country such as America, there are a variety of ways for a person to achieve what he or she wants. For example, one can find a job and acquire credit. Before you know it, that person with the job and new line of credit will be able to buy what he or she has desired for a while, be it a new car, computer and so on. In a Third World country, things are slightly different. For having a job there does not necessarily mean one has financial independence. In fact, such a person might not be able to move out from his or her parents’ home unless he can land a higher paying job and one way to do that is by landing a college degree. Of course for this, one needs money for there might not be an abundance of college financial aid there like there is in a First World country such as America. On the other hand, let’s say one is able to attend college and does land that degree, and the higher paying job, it might still be a while before he can think of purchasing those things he wants, first he has to secure his family’s needs and wants. Something that can seem like a neverending aspect of life for that family that put you through college expect you to help them, especially now that you are successful. The envy situation though is so bad in most Third World countries that, some of one’s own family members might keep that person’s successes a secret from the the rest of the family, unless of course, you, the successful person divulges that information to them, yourself. As to how some of this envy has effected me? There are some family members (not members of my immediate family) who are still upset with me at not giving them a free copy of my book, Karen’s Adventure. For they expected me to give them yes, free copies. Actually seeing the physical book on their coffee tables would be a true sign that some success has been achieved. Most of them do not bother to read my online articles either, it might be too much for the green eyed monster that dwells within them to handle. On a personal note, if people have worked hard to achieve the things they have, others should be happy for them; life is too short to harbour envy. ------------ About the author Judy Ramsook: My first book titled: "Karen's Adventure" which is about two young girls who go in search of their missing parents, is now available.
