Who Is Your Spiritual Father? John 8: 31-44

“31Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how say thou, Ye shall be made free? 34Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever commits sin is the servant of sin. 35And the servant abides not in the house for ever: but the Son abides ever. 36If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” (John 8:31-36)

Christians who know the Lord and have received the Lord into the life have a freedom that cannot be experienced by those who reject. This is not a freedom to sin and it is not a freedom to compromise with the world. It is a freedom from that bondage. Jesus declared that those who commit sin are the servants of sin. It is only the Son who can make one free. Jesus never taught compromise. He instructed complete righteousness. Having Christ in the life is righteousness to the believer. The believer has an advocate should he stumble. One might stumble, yet continue in the grace of God. Many have stumbled who have walked away from the truth, accepting the lie.

“37I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. 38I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father. 39They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus said unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham. 40But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.” (John 8:37-40)

The Jewish audience here is invoking the name of the Father of the Hebrew race. Abraham is counted as the first Jew by right of circumcision. These Jews were confused. They should have known Jesus for who he represented. The miracles of Jesus were could only be miracles wrought by God. Abraham would have recognized Jesus. These men wanted to kill Jesus through their mistrust and misunderstanding. If they had known their Father Abraham better they would not have stood rejecting the Son of God standing before them.

People seek to kill Jesus and the Word of Jesus for only one reason. God has no place. The word of Jesus has no place in the heart and the life of the unbeliever. Jesus must die. Jesus must face death from each soul in rejection of his message of peace and hope of eternal life.

“41Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. 42Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. 43Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.” (John 8: 41-43)

To kill Jesus is to do the works of your father. Jesus gives life to all those who accept him. This life flows from his Father. Jesus cannot help but do the will of the Father in bringing souls to life everlasting. Those who see the real Christ and love the Lord can claim the true God of heaven as their Father because that is the correct response of one who has been saved.

“44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”

Those who seek to stop the message of Jesus are of the devil. Simply, they are liars and there is no truth in anything they might address of a spiritual nature. Their motives are apparent. They want to strip belief from the life. They wish to shame believers and bring the Gospel into disrepute. It is their message, whatever that might be, that is the more important. “The lusts of their father [the devil] will they do.”

The Christian must guard against haughtiness. We understand we have the spiritual advantage. We need never argue the world’s wisdom when it comes to the power and authority of God. God is in complete control of universal events. The believer is only a small part of that, so we need not think of ourselves more highly than what a molecule might be to a small patch of skin on a scraped elbow. We will let our Father justify our position in the Body of Christ. The unbeliever can talk to his father the devil about his position as it suits him.
