President Bush Doesn't Watch Enough Television!

By Brooks A. Mick, M.D.
Mar. 2, 2006

I picked up the paper this morning and saw a headline, "Bush Warned about Katrina the Day Before." My eyes flew open in surprise. This was a very important revelation. My mind flew back to those days preceding Katrina's strike on the New Orleans area and I realized immediately the reason for the slow White House response: President Bush doesn't watch enough television!

The TV weathermen had been warning about the damage Katrina could inflict if it should strike New Orleans for many days, and yet here was President Bush only being warned by his inept White House weather-warning staff at the last moments.

Why hadn't these White House weather-warners warned Bush several days before? Why, oh why, hadn't President Bush turned on Fox News and watched Janice Dean, who looks much like their financial commentator Daryn Kagan in a blonde wig (Is Fox trying to save money by having their reporters do double duty?) warning everybody to get out of New Orleans, a very strong storm is coming, my goodness is may be Category 5, Run! Run! Run for your lives!

The somewhat balding guy who has predicted disaster with every hurricane all summer was, as usual, warning of disaster. And yet the President was warned only the day before.

Surprising to me, President Bush simply told his staff that he appreciated their long hours of work (If they had worked a few more hours, perhaps they could have warned him 5 days before!), that he knew they would have to work many more long hours in order to help the people of New Orleans, and then he went back to fighting terrorism and other presidential duties. I was amazed that he did not immediately morph into Jimmy Carter, roll up his sleeves, and go to New Orleans and start piling sandbags on the levee and hammering plywood over the windows of the shops and restaurants and dixieland clubs on Bourbon Street.

My plan, then, for the next hurricane season is for congress to pass a special emergency appropriations bill to put a big-screen TV in the White House and turn it on and tune it in to Fox News where the president can get weather briefings more than a day ahead.

I can well understand why the newspaper would make this lapse in weather-warning a major headline. It is a great surprise to the news media that the President was not watching Fox News regularly. If he had been, he would have been warned about Katrina much earlier.
