To Error Is Human, Screwing Up Is A No-No

By Ken Hughes
Mar. 2, 2006

Hurricane Katrina will come back to haunt Republicans for the next half dozen elections. If Democrats have finally found a dent in President Bush’s armor it’s the past hurricane season. “W” doesn’t get high marks for his administrations handling of hurricane Katrina. The entire blame shouldn’t rest on the shoulders of President Bush after all FEMA had been doing a more than acceptable job in the past. All of the square pegs seemed to be in the right round holes, what’s there to worry about..??

Katrina was like no other hurricane, Camille her baby sister didn’t compare. Mr. Brown the director of hurricane relief , [FEMA] waited until Katrina came ashore to push the panic button. Rather than leading is group instead he went to President Bush and Mr. Chertoff for advice and assistance. That’s like asking Bill Gates where the toilet paper’s kept for the executive’s men’s room. Mr. Brown suggests now he was only asking for help moving a stagnant bureaucracy. He’s probably right that the Departments and the sub department and all their sub department weren’t signing off fast enough to get the ball rolling to handle the disaster. Governments and large originations aren’t geared to move fast in catastrophic conditions. Bureaucracies aren’t geared to move fast regardless who gives commands.

The real blame for the lack of origination doesn’t rest entirely on the Bush Administration. Ray Nagan shares the blame with Louisiana’s Governor Kathleen Blanco. We have no way of knowing what was going through their minds. We can only surmise they were calculating how to reap future political gains from the disaster, so goes Louisiana politics.

It’s probably never occurred to anyone the Army and the National Guard is not only good at keeping order they’re also very good at creating order. Privets don’t need to question if their Sergeant has the authority from his Captain to move rocks, just being told to move the rocks is enough to get them moved.

President Bush has a propensity for getting caught with his pants down. He always seems to manage to come out clean but at what cost? In this case a negative may have created a powerful positive. Turning disaster relief over to the military is an incalculable plus. On the other hand it must be very carefully scrutinized so they don’t acquire too much power. Excessive power given to the military can be as dangerous as giving a box of matches to a three year old.

If George Bush has a fault it’s his trust in those he works with. The president assumes when he gives someone his trust it’ll be repaid in spades, not so Mr. President. Bureaucrats are like wood ticks, for those of you who aren’t outdoorsman a wood tick is a blood sucking little critter that looks like Nancy Pelosi, has the temperament of Howard Dean and the tonicity of Harry Reid they hang on until they die. All wood ticks are Democrats, not all Democrats are wood ticks.

It seems President Bush thought the last term would be a down hill run for his presidency, it would be a cake walk and a free ride since he wouldn’t be running for office again. Not so George, Democrats never give a sucker an even break and that’s exactly how why view you, a sucker. Your coming to the presidency singing cum-ba-ya only encouraged the Democrats hostility. Fortunately you’ve been able to accomplish things in spit of and not because of the opposition.

George Bush will rate with Truman, Johnson, and Reagan three 20th century presidents that got things done.
