What Have Muslims Or Communists Contributed To The Modern World?

By Dan Shanefield
June 28, 2006

It ought to be obvious, by now, that Muslims did not develop the methods used to find the oil, or pump it safely (and put out any fires), or refine it by distillation and catalytic "cracking," or to ship it in tankers. What the Muslims have done is spend their enormous oil profits on palaces, suicide bombings, rockets fired at Israel, and the like. The positive and good developments were made by Christian engineering and business geniuses (and sometimes by Jewish scientists), never ever by Muslims. It's a day-versus-night difference!

The harnessing of nuclear energy was largely developed by Jews: Albert Einstein, Lisa Meitner, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Edward Teller, et al. Christians and Jews used it to bring the mighty Japanese war machine to a grinding halt, and then to make electricity that is now used all over the world. It remains to be seen what Muslim countries like Iran will do with it. But they are unlikely to teach their students that it was not at all a Muslim invention. (Maybe Iran will use it to make a gigantic suicide bomb, so they can all go to 7- virgin heaven!) If we are lucky, they will use it to make electricity and alleviate their grinding poverty. I think there are a lot of very good Muslim people, so let's hope for the best.

Communist China is still a country of extreme poverty, when you look away from the coastal cities. Meanwhile, their amazing prosperity in the coastal urban areas is entirely due to Western (usually American) initiated, capitalist enterprises. Sometimes the leaders of such enterprises were Chinese who got their training and experience in the U.S., and then they went back home to germinate it in the fertile soil of low cost labor. (In fact, I personally trained a small number of their technical leaders, when I was an engineering professor at Rutgers University.) Usually the Americans and Taiwanese went over there and started up those companies and labs. But the only strictly- native Chinese technical success has been in pirating DVDs and other such copyrighted material (although a great financial success!). Communist Chinese creativity has been an utter failure, even compared to capitalist Japan and Korea, let alone compared to America.

In fact, just compare capitalist Samsung and Hyundai to communist North Korean nuclear weapons and rockets. Or south Korea's universal cell phone penetration to North Korea's starvation and misery, and desperate escapee/refugees sneaking into Manchuria. What is pure communism good for? It is only really powerful when used for evil purposes. That ought to be obvious by now.

Even India, still poverty-stricken in the interior regions, is only successful in a few cities where Western computer technology has taken root. It all basically started with Christians and Jews, not in the Hindu or other cultures.

It is worth dwelling for a minute on an important fact. Almost all really new ideas, in technology and also in entertainment and a few other important creative areas, start in the United States of America. For better or worse, it's still true.
