Suing The Tabloids

By Meri Ulrich
June 25, 2006

It has been announced that Reese Witherspoon is suing the tabloid publication "Star" because they published pictures of her where she "looks" pregnant and indicated that she was.

"Vanity thy name is woman"!!!! Reese has two children and is not a stick thin Hollywood star. She is like millions of women who have had kids and retain a bit of a bump afterward. I recall after having my children that I never quite looked the same as I did before their birth.

Reese is a public person in that she makes movies (even winning an Oscar recently for "Walk The Line") and naturally, the paparazzi are interested in everything she does and how she looks. It goes with the territory and one would think that she'd be used to a certain lack of privacy since she seems hell-bent on being famous and has achieved that goal.

To sue a publication for remarking on something that even I could see seems frivolous and ridiculous. A simple denial would have sufficed rather than wasting the time of an already over-burdened judicial system.

What does Ms. Witherspoon hope to accomplish by publicly suing a tabloid? She will garner a lot of attention (attention that she claims is intrusive), on a subject (pregnancy) that she apparently doesn't want the public to comment on so why the announcement of a lawsuit?

I suppose that I will never understand the mind-set of movie stars and famous people. If they want to become famous and be in the forefront of public thought and attention then why complain when photographers follow them around taking their pictures at every opportunity to disseminate to the very same public that they seek out in the first place?

Someone said, "Be careful what you wish for because it may come true" ...maybe the public should completely ignore Ms. Witherspoon, her movies and her in general. We could stop buying tickets to see her films and refrain from buying any DVD's that she appears on and then she would have her wish. She would then be just like the rest of us and no one would bother her or take her picture or comment on how she looks. She would no longer be fodder for the tabloids and she and her family could have that elusive private life that they claim that they crave.

The problem with the above solution is that Ms. Witherspoon would no longer command millions of dollars for her film work and she would not win anymore Oscars and her obsessive need to be a famous Hollywood actress would no longer exist for her. Somehow I don't think that option would make her happy either and that she would miss the attention, the money and the awards.

I believe that every human being deserves a measure of privacy and that to have photographers, fans and the like taking pictures of you, your children and memorializing your every move is intrusive and at the very least annoying. I also believe that if you want to avoid this phenomenon you should NOT strive to be the highest paid actress in the business and that you should not become a public persona.

I'm afraid that Ms. Witherspoon doesn't understand that it is she who put herself in the position to be discussed endlessly and photographed endlessly and that if she gains a few pounds in the wrong place it will be remarked upon in a public forum endlessly.

Either retire from being famous or get over yourself, Reese....you wanted the attention or you would not be where you are; so simply issue a denial through your publicist if someone prints that you look pregnant and move on to your next blockbuster film. You know, the film that you EXPECT the public to shell out their hard-earned cash to see and talk about.

The public can be insatiable when it comes to their idols and if you really don't want to share yourself with us then buy a nice home in the country and live quietly. Just don't ask us to pay for your lifestyle and your multi-million dollar home and then complain when we want to know what you do in your off-time and what your life is like. You can feed our fascination with you or you can live the life of a private citizen..it's your choice, but you can't have it both ways.

There are far worse things that could be written about you then "She looks pregnant". Take a look at what the London newspapers are doing to Heather Mills McCartney and tell me that YOU are really the wounded party in a tabloid frenzy.

Looking slightly pregnant is not such a terrible thing, Reese....not a scandal. Perhaps you are sensitive because the "Star" is indicating that you are a little over-weight in a certain area? Well, there is always spanx or a work out with your trainer to fix that problem and certainly a lawsuit isn't the answer to your little weight problem.

You could always add to your already substantial fortune by endorsing a diet pill like Anna Nicole Smith did. Or, you could get on with your business and not invite even more "bad" publicity and public intrusion into you life by suing.
