Moderators On A Forum

By Kaycee Nilson
June 23, 2006

Moderators on any forum have the hardest job of all. They have to make sure that the laws that are set in place by the board administrators are strictly adhered to and followed. They have to do this diplomatically and without prejudice or personal favorite people. They have to treat everyone the same, no matter what their personal feelings are.

They are the front line defense against spammers and personal attacks. They are the models of which everyone on the board should strive to be. They must judge with their heads and not with their hearts on what is correct and what is incorrect. Before they delete an item, they have to stop and think to themselves, “Is this post inappropriate or do I simply not like this person.”

The teams of moderators on our rebuttal forum are a good team for they balance each other, and they serve as a check and balance team for the administrator.

They cannot delete an entire thread, but they can suggest a thread that is getting out of hand to be deleted by the administrator. Thus keeping peace and harmony along with wit and humor and debate alive without the fear of being attacked over one’s thoughts or opinions.

They have to weed through thread after thread to see who is joking and who is serious. They take time out of their busy day to make sure that the board is kept up and assist the administrator in this daily chore.

What a job they have, and what admiration I have for them for their duties are not easy and not light. It might seem to be fun and games, but these people have to keep decorum in the foremost of their mind. For they are the model of what we should strive to be.

I have full confidence that the team that our administrator put together will be a good team and they will keep the spam bots and other crud off the board.

No, this is not a “Suck-Up” column, but rather a congratulatory one to those brave souls that said yes to the admin when asked to be a moderator on the rebuttal forum.

They have undertaken a very important and very difficult job. A job not to be taken lightly but to be commended for.

For their responsibility is to make the rebuttal forum a forum for not only rebuttals but also good-natured debates on articles and on issues of our day. A place for opinions and a place for jokes. Not a forum for selling Phen Phen or the newest drug. This forum is not a place for “Click here to watch my live web cam!”

This forum has a good selection of moderators and I am dang proud of each one of them for undertaking this auspicious position.
