June 22, 2006 Five teens killed in New Orleans in a gang related shooting. The National Guard was called out to protect the still ailing community's there trying to recover. Incidents like these are common place and becoming more intense as life zooms on. The apathetic values are the cause. I found talking to people is that it's our fault this is spiraling out of control. The more I talked to people about this situation the more I was appalled. There answer was always the same. "If you say something to these gangs' there can be trouble." What the heck happened to discipline and controlling these kids? It starts out in our young. We let them get everything they want and when they figure out that they can also do whatever they want, they usually do. "Oh leave them alone, let them be children." Ten year olds are bullying other children there age, older or younger for lunch money in school toys in there yard and even the clothes off their body. Children are being stabbed for sneakers and other items that are costly. The solution is simple. Control your children and our children will come to no harm, but we don't, they are just children being children. Now knowing that they can get away with small things like lunch money or threatening other children these youngsters are aging and turning into teens. Now the thrills of the smaller things are gone and they move on to bigger things. Mix that with peer pressure and you have the making of a gang. "Oh no, that's not a gang, their just some of my boys friends." Well mommy, your son and his group of friends just took a car that has been sitting in a parking lot for a few days for a joy ride. Now they crashed it into a telephone poll, causing it to fall over into another car. Oh, sure your boy is ok because his group ran from the scene laughing all the way to the bank that they just robbed. "Oh that's what kids do these days. There just having fun. There is really nothing to do around this town." Now that same gang, oops, I mean band of friends break into a store that just closed up. They didn't hear the silent alarm so when inside having fun trashing the place and getting free stuff the police arrived unannounced. You get the call at eleven o' clock, "Hey mom, it's past ten; do you know where your children are?" They are in jail, laughing like it is all a game. Oh, they are released to your custody but you just pat your son on the head and say "I hope you learned your lesson? Now, here is some cookies and milk." People, this is why our youth is in control. There is such a lack of discipline that it makes me sick. They learn from us and our teaching is just dismal. We are teaching our children that they can get away with murder and they usually do. When our sons and daughters are wrong we fight for them but right is right and wrong is wrong and our children are no different then the guy that broke into your home taking your television. Remember that guy is someone's son and the guy that breaks into the next home can be your son. Instilling fear in our children is not a bad thing. That is what is missing in today's society. If they fear not then nothing will get in their way. Stop spoiling these kids before it is too late. They have to want for something or they will stop at nothing to get it and doing nothing will let them in for a huge disappointment, when they head out your door stepping into the world of life. Know where they are at all times. Ask them if they are on drugs. Be involved in there lives. What is the difference between ignorance and apathy? I don't know and I don't care.
