The Nature Of Religion

By Keith Cantrell
June 21, 2006

It has been awhile since I submitted anything to this magazine. After a quick skimming of the most recent articles I can see that some of the same columnists are still at work. I suppose that is refreshing in a familiar sort of way, right?

I also noticed that some of the same topics keep coming up in the articles that are posted. Oh, well, without controversy what fun would it be? Take John Michael McRae for instance. He's still there sticking up for that good old gospel story. Bless his little bitty pea picking heart! I must admire his faithfulness. If all Christians were as faithful as him there might not be anything to criticize about the largest religion in the world.

However, he took on the subjects of heaven and hell in a recent article without offering any proof that they exist. So, maybe a primer is in order. For us to believe anything is true, there must be a standard to go by. In other words if something is true it must be provable. You can't just say whatever you want and expect people to believe it is true if you can't prove it or experience it. That would be ridiculous. People would be believing all sorts of weird things like UFOs, Santa Claus, ghosts, demons, angels, miracles, and that politicians actually have brains. Wouldn't that be strange?

So, for the record, truth is that which corresponds to fact or reality. In other words if something is true it can be proven or it can be experienced. This, however, is not the case with heaven or hell.

If heaven and hell exist, the first question we should ask is, where are they? What do they look like? How come we've never discovered them after thousands of years of believing in them? Well, according to believers, that's because they are in the "supernatural" world, wherever that is. So, again the same rule applies. If anything "supernatural" actually exists we should be able to touch it, taste it, smell it, hear it and see it. None of this is true. I can't find a single person who has ever seen or otherwise experienced heaven or hell. No space shuttle ever encountered them nor have any of our space probes ever come across them. Either they are somewhere else or they simply don't exist.

This single example effectively illustrates the main problem with religion in general, including Christianity. Much of what they believe is based merely on faith not reality. Without hard evidence and undeniable proof nothing about any religion can honestly be said to be true.

Religion, then, is nothing more than myth disguised as truth and that is all there is to it.

About the author: Keith Cantrell lives in a small town in Oregon where he was a fundamentalist, born-again, evangelical Christian for over 35 years. After many years of questioning and research he has finally become an agnostic. He has written a book entitled "The World's Most Dangerous Book" and it tells the history and origins of the Bible. It's the only book on the market that takes the Bible from cover to cover, Genesis to Revelation and explores who wrote it, where it came from and how it all got put together. It's the 21st century. Isn't it time you knew the truth about the Bible? This book is available at Barnes and Noble, Borders, Waldenbooks and Amazon.com. Read it and tell me what you think! After all, I could be wrong!
