June 21, 2006 Hip hop doesn't celebrate love and romance, it glorifies disposable sex with interchangeable partners. Rap is to poetry what Thunderbird is to fine wine. Finding words to rhyme with "bitch" doesn't make you a poet, it marks you as an illiterate misogynist. Raps songs are a paean to materialism, that's why they contain so many references to brand names. Any rap ditty worth its salt has more mentions of Cristal, Hennessey, Escalade and Rolex that you can shake a pimp glass at. Dissolute rappers boast about guzzling Cristal, frequently mentioning the high-end champagne in their forgettable songs. In The Economist magazine, Frederic Rouzaud, the CEO of the company that produces Cristal said he viewed the affection for Cristal from rappers with "curiosity and serenity." Asked by the reporter if the association between Cristal and the "bling lifestyle" could be detrimental, Rouzaud responded: "That's a good question, but what can we do? We can't forbid people from buying it. I'm sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business." Jay-Z and other rappers have reacted with outrage, accusing Rouzaud of racism and vowing not to consume or mention Cristal any more. A quality product like Cristal is better off without the endorsement of rappers. It cheapens the mystique of Cristal to be mentioned in a rap song that also mentions bitches and hoes. ------------ About the author: Robert Paul Reyes has written over 300 articles for Useless-Knowledge.com.
