Happy Father's Day!!!

By Kaycee Nilson
June 18, 2006

You know, I gushed about my step-dad last year and with good reason, he deserves to be gushed over. But this year’s column is dedicated to my father-in-law-to-be.

Paul is a simple man, he loves his kids, grandkids and great grandkids. He and his wife, Dan’s Step-mom, Judy, took my two oldest children and me in and treated us from day one as if we had been born into the family. Of course I took the good-natured ribbing from Paul about my accent, but I knew that he was just trying to break the ice the first time we met. I’ll never forget that moment, I was pregnant with my youngest child and in a Packer down filled coat and he asked me if I was a Dallas Cowboy Fan.

If anything, I am a New Orleans Saints Fan. Not to mention NASCAR, which set me in real well with Dan’s brother-in-law, Rodney. But I think that Paul was impressed that I was looking him in the eye everytime we spoke.

When I found out I had ovarian cancer, he was the first call I made after Dan and I found out, I cried to him before I even told my own mother.

For some reason, Paul puts me at ease and he really cares about my medical mishaps that I have had in the past 5 years that he has known me. To me, to be accepted by the patriarch was and is still, important to me to be a part of the family that I would one day marry into.

Paul looks a lot like Dan except for the hair. They both have the same beautiful blue eyes that my youngest child has. They both have the same wit and I love them both dearly.

Paul is just the funniest and wonderfully warm hearted man to be around. I love sitting with him and going on and on about the game on the TV or the packers and how he is going to slowly transform me into a “Cheesehead.” I remember our summer vacation last year and when I spent over $150 in the Packer pro-shop, I had to call Paul and tell him all about everything I bought. I could hear the laughter in his voice at my excitement over my swimsuit and the socks.

I almost ran out of breath telling him all about the Packer Hall of Fame that he probably has been through at least once or twice. He sounded so proud when I told him all about the Hall of Fame and falling in love with the Packer’s first Super Bowl Ring.

I know it sounds corny, but I am looking forwards to having him as a father-in-law. I really like the man and enjoy his company and the phone calls and visits we have with each other.
