June 18, 2006 Hey, I saw a column by Judy Ramsook posted today. How happy am I? Happy Father’s Day to all you “Dads” out there in cyber-land! You do understand this is for actual “fathers” who actually fathered their children then managed to stay with the mother of the children fathered until they were spending outrageous amounts of money for college tuitions and daughter’s weddings? You do understand this is for the fathers who took their children to play rehearsal and stayed through the many tough calls from bad little league umpires and ice hockey referees? You do realize this is for the dads who helped with the homework and taught their sons how to properly respect girls while explaining to daughters the hormonal proclivities of young men? This is for the dads who brought up their children to respect their elders and monitored their after-school activities and set the curfews and reserved a belt for the more egregious errors in judgment. This is for the dads who taught their children to drive and who volunteered for duty with the Boy Scouts or the Girl Scouts. This is for the dads who honored morality and tried their best to guide their children to the right choices or the familial traditional choices that would brand their future character and legacy. This is for all the dads who understood the reasons for all the long hours at work necessary to keep the bills and the taxes paid and didn’t grumble too much if they didn’t have anything left over for a trip to the bowling alley or the pool hall. This is for the fathers who stayed up those long nights with the colicky baby; who walked boldly into those delivery rooms and managed not to pass out when the after-birth slopped on the floor; who sustained the fingernail gashes in the arms and shoulders from the pregnant lady calling you every name in creation and swearing swift retaliation for every labor pain inflicted. This is for the dads who have adopted children and raised them in love as their own children. This is for the fathers who have fostered children through adulthood and then continued to support and defend their foster children in their life’s decisions. This is for the fathers who volunteered to go to war to defend the nation where their children live in safety because of their efforts. This is for the fathers who have fallen, defending the freedoms of their families against the nation’s enemies. This is for the single fathers who have had to take control of their children for whatever reason and have gone on to raise them despite the obstacles of child care and court appearances or the even greater obstacles of hospital bills and funeral costs. Happy Father’s Day Guys! I hope your refrigerator has a hand-drawn picture from your munchkin stating “I Love My Dad”. I hope your older children have sent you that box of cigars or that bottle of scotch or that band new TIE! I hope the funny cards have made you laugh and I hope the more serious cards have brought a tear to your eyes. I hope your sons have hugged you just as hard as your daughters and I hope you’ve heard those words every single dad who ever lived wanted his children to say. “I Love You Dad!” ------------ About the Author: Michael John McCrae has contributed over 500 articles to Useless-Knowledge.com.
