An Inner City Kindergarten Graduation

By Kaycee Nilson
June 14, 2006

Recently, my best friends had two grandchildren that graduated kindergarten in the inner city of Chicago. The graduation services were lovely with the beaming kindergarteners in their caps and gowns walked across stage to receive their certificates of completion of the kindergarten program of their school.

Needless to say, the party after was one big blowout. They had beef rib tips, bar-b-qued on the grill, fresh greens with pigtails, spaghetti, chicken, brats, hot dogs and music provided by yours truly via my computer hooked up to two speakers that blared party music out into the backyard so that the kids could dance and have a good time.

I even found time to take a nap with my two youngest godchildren, Nate (aged 5 months) and Kiata (aged 17 1/2 months) on the bed of Greg and Wanda. They even have a picture of me in the middle with the two babies snuggled up to me. After we woke up from our nap, everyone asked me how I did it, and it was really quite simple. I hummed different Disney songs while I had Nate on the side where he could hear my heart beat.

There were smokers at the party and you will be proud to know that I did resist temptation except for one drag off of a Newport. I didn’t smoke menthol before and it almost made me gag. I had to stick two pieces of Extra Green Apple gum in my mouth just to get rid of the taste and Dan chewed me out the rest of the night.

But there is no food like soul food, and there is no love like family love. I feel like I am a part of that family as all the kids call me “Aunt Kaycee.” And their parents treat me like I am a sister that had been long lost. I love the encouragement and the love I receive from that family. They keep me going and are willing to accept me as part of their family and they love the way I am quick to jump to the defense of anyone in the family.

They will even come to my defense and they all treated me yesterday as I was one of them even though I am in a medical corset and not able to get in the floor and play with the kids like I used to do.

For some reason, the family decided that I should eat first and then they kept feeding me. Every time I turned around, my oldest goddaughter, Sophia, was bringing me more food. I ate so much I had to take off the corset in order to just be able to breathe. And I couldn’t make any moves because Nate and Kiata had to be right there beside me or in my arms.

It’s bad enough that the corset keeps me from twisting or bending over, but to have two babies insist that I do my god motherly duties made my heart burst with love. Hooking up my computer to two speakers and then playing party music and watching the older children dance, even my own two sons got in on the dancing, was the best medicine I could ever have received.

Congratulations Christiana and Armani, you did a wonderful job this past year in school and I know that first grade will be even better for you both!

Love, Aunt Kaycee
