June 12, 2006 This should be the question that voters should think about this November. If they truly believe that this country is going pot, then you should vote for the party that is constantly yelling that the sky is falling. (Hint: Howard Dean is in charge). If you think that this is a good country, the best in the world, and that contrary to the rantings of the unhinged this country is not a fascist dictatorship and not nearly as miserable as they want everyone to believe then you shouldn't vote to make Nancy Pelosi Speaker of the House. But to listen to people you'd think that America were on its last leg. Of course every election year, since 1994, they have bemoaned the state of the union, assuring us that things are getting worse and will continue to do so until the democrats are back in power. (Just like things are supposed to be). They kept saying this in 2004 and the people decided they didn't want the democrats back in power. So what do the facts say? Yes, Americans are largely against the Iraq war, but they are also against cutting and running. A lot of the pessimism comes from the impatience of Americans. We had no problem with removing Saddam Hussein, after all that only took three weeks, but a three year reconstruction is another matter. And with car bombings, beheadings, shiite and Sunni violence many Americans are saying "to hell with 'em" Let them blow each other up. Of course leaving Iraq now would almost certainly turn Iraq into a Taliban state, but more importantly leaving Iraq would let the terrorists claim a victory. It would embolden them, encourage more recruits to their jihadist cause and make the world safer for terrorists. Wile many Americans don't agree with the mission they think, rightly, that it is better to battle terrorists in Baghdad than in New York, better to fight them in Kandahar than in Washington D.C. And make no mistake, they will continue to launch attacks against the west whether we are in Iraq or not. So do the facts support the pessimism? Compared to past wars this war has been our most successful. Two blood thirsty, fascist, regimes are gone. Budding democracies have taken their place and the local dictatorships are under pressure to change. In world war two hundreds of soldiers died every day, in this war the national media can focus on the death of a single soldier. The bloodiest month in Iraq is more peaceful than the most peaceful week in Vietnam. About 2,500 Americans have died in Afghanistan and Iraq. All their deaths were tragic, so were the terrorist attacks that forced us into this war. The soldiers believe in their mission, perhaps it's time the civilians start to as well. Tens of thousands of terrorists have been killed, sending a message through their ranks that America is serious. As a result their recruitment has suffered and they have to settle for smaller targets. So it's much to the horror of the left and the paleo right that we are winning this war. The American people need to remember that. Oddly, the pessimism extend beyond foreign affairs and into the economy, which is booming. Unemployment is down to 4.6%, manufacturing is up(though no one seems to know that, or wants to admit it) our economy is growing nicely, which is more than Europe can say. Aside from pesky gas prices there really isn't anything to complain about. But to hear about the prophets of doom and gloom we have the economy of Zimbabwe, not the largest economy on the planet. One half expects NBC, or CBS, to do a story on their breadlines and their inevitable returns. What happened to that "Can do" attitude that so many Americans possessed? We're starting to sound like a bunch of Frenchmen with all our predictions of imminent catastrophe. Contrary to what people think America is strong and prosperous, and despite problems we face today our best days lie ahead of us. It's something that we Americans need to remember. ------------ About the author: Craig Chamberlain has written more than 100 articles for Useless-Knowledge.com.
