Has Ann Coulter Gone....MAD?

By Patrick Hurley
June 10, 2006

Before I type another word I want to make something clear.

I am a Conservative Republican.

This means I have enjoyed Ann Coulter's comments in the past. But, her latest comments have made me think twice about a blanket endorsement of her views concerning politics from here on out.

Unless you have been living on another planet, you have undoubtedly heard by now that Ann, the girl next door with a howitzer, has written a new book that is not exactly complimentary to the left-wing of the Democratic Party....

"Godless: The Church of Liberalism." Nice title, eh?

She makes no bones about it. She is the attack dog for the conservative wing of the Republican Party. But, in order to sell her new book, she has gone a little too far.

Responding to four women who lost their husbands in the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center, Coulter writes, "These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' death so much."

Now, it is true that these widows have played to the media, not for personal glory, but to use their high visibility status to help ensure that the tragedy they suffered will never happen again in this country. Suggesting that they are happy because their husbands are dead is inappropriate and beyond even what we imagined Ann Coulter to say. This is the same woman who stated, "My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building." When criticized for that comment, she clarified herself, "I should have added, 'after everyone had left the building except the editors and reporters.'"

She made her views public on former President Clinton, too. After he made national news in 2001 for setting up an office in Harlem, Ann was quick to comment, "As one of my friends remarked, that should be nice. Having escaped a mugging on the way to work, Clinton's female employees will then have to face an accused rapist in the office."

Are you looking for entertainment at your next conservative fund-raiser? One gets the feeling that if she came she would not only blast the other side, she would stand there and glare at you until you wrote out the check. She makes Don Rickles look like Mr. Rogers.

How would you like to date this babe? Can you imagine what she would say if you left the toilet seat up? Forgot to open her car door? Burped at dinner? Or worse yet, mentioned you felt sorry for anyone who lost a loved one on 9/11...

Keep that gun under your pillow.

It is one thing to politically respond to those people and situations who use their agenda to promote their cause. It is quite another to assume that someone who goes on television to highlight the loss of the man they loved is a threat to the Presidency of the United States. Yes, these women did endorse John Kerry against George Bush. But, unlike Cindy Sheehan, they did not go to the extreme, calling him derogatory names and using the loss of their most cherished relative in an attempt to make the C-List in Hollywood. Comparing the, "Witches of New Brunswick," (Ann's moniker for them) to Sheehan is tantamount to equating the Exxon Valdez to the Titanic. Ann needs to take a chill pill. Perhaps it is time for her to take a little vacation before she becomes as obsessed as that OTHER Annie...the one in the movie, "Misery" who went after James Caan like Coulter goes after Democrats.

Mental illness can take on many forms.

Even political ones.
