June 7, 2006 Ann Coulter recently wrote about a group of women who were widowed by the tragedy on September 11th. Saying they acted "as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them," and stating that "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much." Ann's problem seems to be that they have attacked the actions of President Bush after the terrorist strike. That they are using their grief, "to make a political point." But didn't Bush run ads in the last election showing the planes crashing into the buildings? Has he not mentioned the attack in most of his speeches? How is it OK for Bush, who did not lose anyone in the attack, to use it for political gain; but not OK for a woman who has lost her mate, her children's father, and her best friend, to present a rebuttal? What right does Ann Coulter, with no experience of this loss, have to judge how these women feel? What about Iraq or Afghanistan widows? If a woman is married to a man who is serving his country in a foreign land, and he is killed because of someones stupidity or bigotry, can she be angry? If we followed Ann's political beliefs, would women even have the right to vote? Would anyone even listen to Ann? She is a woman after all. She has her right to freedom of speech, but it does not give her the right to take away another person's freedom of speech, or justify her belittling of another person's freedom of speech. Recently Ann Coulter wrote in her columns that Arabs were "Savages," "jihad monkey(s)," and said that violent riots were the normal response of Arabs. I would not be surprised if her words are not quoted directly by Al-Quida and used to recruit terrorists. If a single husband dies because of Ann's words, can his widow criticize her knee-jerk conservatism? Is she so stupid that she didn't realize she was encouraging future terrorist and insurgent attacks? Or was it intentional? Was she hoping for another terrorist attack? A way to refocus the nation's attention on the subjects her party is perceived as strong on?
If Ann Coulter intentionally gave aid and comfort to
the terrorists by saying things she knew would inflame
passions, did she commit treason? Does that put her
on par with Jane Fonda? Can the wife of a man killed
in her petty political maneuvering complain? Or must
a widow be silent?
