![]() By Jack Lepiarz June 6, 2006 There are a few things that no decent human being can do and actually call themselves a decent human being. One of those things is to pick on and otherwise harass other people--particularly kids. But, then again, like the world of politics, the world of Hollywood and public life rarely has room for morality. Jealousy, scandal, and sometimes even violence can be commonplace amongst the nation's public figures. So, naturally, people like to hear about their favorite celebrities, and how Paris Hilton made herself look like a smug, rich idiot this week. But sometimes, Paris didn't do anything newsworthy. In fact, sometimes it can be very hard to get a story out of the Bennifers and the Vaughnistons and, worst of all, the TomKats. Some tabloid magazines and websites resort to making up stories about celebrities. Or, worse yet, making up stories about people who aren't even old enough to vote. People that don't even have a driver's license. One of my friends, Lexi Lehman, has been unwillingly placed into that unfortunate circumstance. Gawker.com has taken a disliking to her, apparently, and enjoys making snide and scathing remarks about her every now and then. Whether it's offhandedly mentioning that she is working for a public-relations company founded by former porn stars or accusing her of being a drunk party girl along the lines of Paris Hilton. Possibly the worst part about Gawker picking on a kid like this is that she is not an A-list celebrity. She is not even a D-list celebrity. Apparently, though, Gawker must simply enjoy harassing minors like this, then. I think that at some point in every person's teenage life, they have a moment where an adult, or even a group of adults will pass judgement on them, or will give them a raw deal based on the way they look or act. It is very rare, however, that a teenager will be harassed by an entire tabloid, and have all of the remarks against them published for the world to see. Speaking as a 17-year-old, I cannot express my frustration and anger that Gawker would go after a kindhearted, innocent girl like this. That fully grown adults need to degrade a teenager like this indicates either a striking amount of innate malevolence, or just a desperate need to harass a kid to make themselves feel stronger (I guess gossiping about George Clooney can get boring after a while). Either way, it makes them look pretty pathetic. ------------ About the author: Jack Lepiarz is a senior at Madison High School.
