The Will Of God - [What God Thinks]

By Skip Toomaloo

“And he that searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. (Romans 8:27)

The spiritual protection of the saints of God is a high priority of God’s will. He has enabled the believer by indwelling him with the “Comforter” which is the Holy Spirit and it is the Holy Spirit who executes the will of God in the life of the believer by continual intercession. The Father always knows the mind of the Comforter.

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:2)

The will of God insists upon spiritual transformation. To be indwelt and led by the Spirit is to be outside the influence of the sinful world. Conformation to the idealism of the world is anti-God. It is the renewal of the mind by accepting the truths of God’s instruction that produces what can be considered truly “good”.

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Everyone who has every lived in the world has faced the same temptations. Even Jesus was tempted of the devil. It is the will of God that you will never be tempted above that which you can bear. There will always be an escape route. No one was tempted or went through unbearable trials more than Jesus. He faced every trial in the same manner allowing his Father to determine the outcome. Too often a Christian will try to face a trouble without consulting the Lord and all too often the Christian will fail. That doesn’t mean a failure on God’s part because his promise is sure. Jesus once told his disciples that in the day of temptation don’t worry about what you will say because the words will be there. Trust God!

“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:” (1 Thessalonians 4:3)

The “sanctification” (separation) of the Christian from sin is the constant New Testament theme. The major theme of the Old Testament is very similar that Israel would separate herself from all other supposed gods. Sin and idolatry harm the relationship between the believer and God. Yet, there is an even more practical reason to “abstain from fornication”. Abstinence prevents 100% of unwanted pregnancies. Abstinence prevents 100% of every known Sexually Transmitted Disease including HIV and AIDS. Abstinence from fornication prevents 100% of adulterous situations that cause marital breakups. Abstinence from fornication prevents 100% of homosexual activity. Abstinence from fornication would save billions of dollars now being wasted on ineffective antiviral medications, ineffective sex instructions in public schools and condom distribution.

I know. The fact that “abstinence” works every single time it is tried means nothing. I also know that since it is the “will of God” that men abstain from fornication that men will naturally rebel and do whatever it is that makes them feel superior to the stated will of God. There is no harm in the reminder though.

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

This is also the will of God. Men have nothing that hasn’t been created by God. The scriptures declare Jesus the Creator and the one “by whom all things consist”. It is God that holds and will hold all things together until he determines it is that last day. Each man is free to look into his own soul for the gratitude that belongs to the God who has given him all his worth.

“For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:” (1 Peter 2:15)

The will of God for the Christian is to seek the example of the Lord Jesus. When Jesus was confronted by the religionists he put their ignorance to shame. When Jesus faced the governor the governor could find no fault. The Pharisees had to lie to make a case to the people. The truth could not be contemplated. They would have been shown the idiots they were had the truths of Jesus been allowed to govern events.

Christianity is no less despised today because Jesus is still both the most beloved and the most disrespected soul of history. This is how we understand the truths spoken by God. All this hatred and gainsaying was prophesied. Men are martyred even in these modern days. I have read and been told of men in the Middle East who have surrendered to Christ only to lose their heads when discovered by Islamists. The bravery of faith and the ability to overcome and escape trial as God has promised is proof enough that God still deals directly and individually with men.

“For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.” (1 Peter 3:17)

If the Christian suffers for doing what is right, that is right. It would be expected of a Christian to suffer trial if doing what he isn’t supposed to be doing. God thinks highly of his children. As adopted members of the household of God we know first hand the will of the Father and the intent of the Spirit.

Continue to do well Christian. Continue to “put to silence the ignorance of foolish men”.
