June 1, 2006 I would like someone who is really smart to explain to me basically how a computer programmer will ever program empathy into an electronic computer. How can empathy be programmed into a computing machine or an artificial intelligence device? You don't have to write out the whole empathy program. Just explain to me basically what the basic coding innovation is. The empathetic robotic insectoid, angeloid, or humanoid would simply need to be linked to certain other robotic creations and/or to certain humans who take care of the empathetic computer and defend it against viruses and other destructive elements. We are talking here about programming genuine feeling intelligence into a computer, not merely logical sum-difference, 0 versus 1; that is to say 0.000 versus 1.000 intelligence. That's easy stuff. I just would like to have an explanation, because to me, general human intelligence includes feeling intelligence and intuitive intelligence which are at least a big part of human empathy. How can you have created genuine "artificial intelligence" in a machine without creating a machine that feels as well as calculates using the simplistic "yes/no" binary digital code? Furthermore, what does the smart computer do with ambiguity? How does the smart computer deal with logical inconsistency? Is the super-smart feeling computer able to intuit the profound meaning in a sentence such as, "This statement is false" and stop itself from burning out from endless recycling? How does the super-smart machine deal intelligently with a seemingly paradoxical issue? Programmer... how do you create the laughing computer, the good humored tin man? Really smart and creative people are able to function creatively amidst ambiguity. It's well known that creative geniuses thrive amidst ambiguity. Where other people fail to move ahead in the midst of worrisome ambiguities, really smart and creative people keep the comedy up and move ahead and solve the deep problem. Hence the "singularity" mythical superhuman computer would be super-empathetic and super-creative, not just a whiz-bang chess player or multiple calculating machine. How do the aritificial intelligence experts define "genius" and program "genius" into a machine? To have any "singularity" you've got to have empathy. In my perfunctory examinations I do not find many references to super intelligence (which includes empathy) in papers on artificial intelligence. This makes me wonder what really makes these techno-people tick. For instance, here's a verbatim quote from the article "Artificial Intelligence and Philosophy - James Matthews": "Computer Understanding. Computer understanding will no doubt, never get to a "complete empathy"-stage of understanding. Cognitive understanding would be sufficient for all our needs, given that is on par with the understanding we same with 99% of the human race!"(http://library.advanced.org/18242/gather/cgi-bin/philosophy/1.html). This statement suggests that Mr. Matthews either is not empathetic, or he isn't thoughtful. I am pretty sure that Mr. Matthews sometimes is both empathetic and thoughtful, but empathy is not encouraged in school children, because very empathetic children are not very competitive. Empathetic children do not work hard with a conscious intent to beat, hurt, or shame other people. Extremely empathetic people in fact tend to leave school and drop out of the rat race. In real life, successful competitors sometimes get converted after they've graduated from school. So just suppose for example, if you could program empathy into a super-smart computer, the computer would let the human chess master, whose intelligence is inferior, win the game. The supersmart computer would be like a father teaching his young son, not just how to play chess, but also how to be a kind, patient, and super father. The question is how does the expert in artificial intelligence program the "human side" of intelligence into a nuts and bolts, solder and binary code super fatherly device? I am curious to know how this is being done. If it's not being done, then how can the technologists make such fantastic claims about creating super-intelligent devices? Just explain how computer experts are creating empathetic super machines which teach empathy to children and to other machines. This is making computers into super fathers, digitized saints, or even robot-gods. (the real postmodern stuff of medieval legends) All the while there is very little empathy in the U-K shark tank. Often, as I scan U-K articles and rebuttals I get this picture of a bunch of ravenous and relatively low life yet facile forms submerged in dark murky and bloodied salt waters tearing apart the underbelly of a half-dead whale, and taking bites out of one another during the savage online feeding frenzy. From time to time some U-K writer suggests that U-K columnists rise to a higher level and take a little time to pause and reflect, but it's not long before the sharks are at it again, and the basic issue is ignored. The basic issue is empathy- walking a mile or more in the other person's moccasins, and going that biblical extra mile. In reading articles and books, the logic-bound columnists need to work harder to parse the spirit, not just scrutinize the logic. This rule also applies, of course, to reading The Bible. Ah yes, The Bible! The Bible doesn't parse perfectly logically, but the suggestion that empathy is an essential trait of the higher human intelligence does come up often in the New Testament. Whether Jesus Christ was or is a real historical character or not, no rational skeptic can deny that certain persons are unusually empathetic. In fact the personal histories of war are replete with empaths. Under the intense stresses of combat the empathetic soldier identifies with his comrades totally and falls on a live grenade to trade his one life for many more lives that physically are not his own life. The hero's sacrifice shows total thrift, and total diminution of ego. Christ or not, fictitious or real, the memorial hero dies so that other persons continue to live...the angeloid insectoid 100% dependable and predictable intelligence that has been programmed into every worker Apis mellifica. So professional scientist and/or computer programmer- please explain to me how you program a machine to be so calculating and so thrifty. What kind of digital coding is involved? Furthermore, please, as a kind and patient teacher, prove that you mean well. Demonstrate that you yourself have empathy. Don't just point out flaws in my logic. Such nitpicking avoids the issue. With competent professional editorial help my talk will be improved. Bees talk with their stingers. They die a hero's death 100% of the time demonstrating the coding of heroic angeloids. Some smug entomologists call social bees "mindless machines." So programmer-scientist. Create just one social machine. Create just one social intelligence. Humanoid or apoid, each single social intelligence devotes itself to the integrated universal intelligence. Basically this article asks scientists and programmers to demonstrate with accuracy, kindness, and patience how science is truly safe and sane over the long term. Your efforts will encourage huge numbers of earnest young people to study science and support science.
