July 31, 2005 The consensus of opinion among the most influential journalists in the US today seems to be, “Israelis are always and everywhere in the right about all matters great and small, whereas Arabs are always and everywhere in the wrong, unless of course they agree with Israelis.” If Israel kills 800 Lebanese because of a confrontation which began with the arrest of two Israelí soldiers found illegally in Lebanon, you can count on many an American newspaper to sing the same old refrain, “Israel has a right to defend itself.” But if the situation were reversed, there would be shrill outcries against the Lebanese and Arabs in general, like, “They’re savages! They’re barbarians!” This might be the very headline of the New York Post or the New York Sun on such an occasion. It’s savagery to burn and lynch four American mercenaries, but killing 40 Lebanese women and children is a moderate response a kidnapping, to hear them tell it. What are the names of these journalists who poison the wells of information in the US today? Well, here are a few names of present or recently-retired writers of this ilk: William Safire, Charles Krauthammer, Daniel Pipes, William Kristol, Irving Kristol, Mortimer Zuckerman, Lawrence Kaplan, Norman Podhoretz, John Podhoretz, Jonah Goldberg, Jonathan Goldberg, Alan Dershowitz, Frank Gaffney Jr., Michael Ledeen, David Frum, Clifford May, A. M. Rosenthal, Martin Peretz, Judith Miller, Laurie Mylroie, Norman Perlstine, Sidney Zion, Yossi Halevi, Seth Lipsky, Max Boot, Lawrence Kudlow, Kenneth Pollack, etc., etc. Unless I am mistaken all of these writers have ethnic ties to Israel. It is of course understandable that they sympathiz with Israel, but the question that comes to mind is why are there so many prestigious Jewish journalists in the circumstance that Jews make up only 2.5% of the population of the US. For this, you have to consider the intelligence, craftiness and cunning that are the stock in trade of the Jewish people. This was recognized by Theodor Herzl and is known to me as well. There are some Jewish writers who are less biased, like Thomas Friedman, Robert Novak and Jay Bookman, but this is more than offset by a number of Gentile journalists who always exhibit a pro-Israel prejudice. I can think offhand of William F. Buckley, Víctor Hansen, Ann Coulter, James Taranto, Andrew Sullivan and George Will, a sorry lot of sycophants and slaverers if ever there was one. So who are the opposing journalists, those who show a pro-Arab or at least neutral orientation vis-à-vis the Middle East? They’re mostly obscure or controversial writers who are widely vilified by the more influential bloc, such as Pat Buchanan, Llewellyn Rockwell, Charley Reese, Alexander Cockburn and Joseph Sobran. Occasionally, one finds an honest, forthright American—believe it or not—writing for Pravda, the Hindustan Times or some other foreign newspaper, where they’re out of the range of the defamations and tricks of the others. Some good, decent foreign journalists are Eric Margolis, a Canadian, and John Pilger, an Australian. Antecedent to the military superiority that Israel has demonstrated repeatedly in the Middle East, is the public-relations superiority that Israelis have always maintained in the US through the Jewish high priests of the American press and other media, and their Gentile acolytes. The American public gets all its information and opinions from the mass media. No wonder they say that Israel shares our values and ideals. It might be more honest to say that we have adopted theirs, at least when it comes to the Middle East. ------------ About the author Thomas Keyes: I have written two books: A SOJOURN IN ASIA (non-fiction) and A TALE OF UNG (fiction), neither published so far.
