![]() By Judy Ramsook July 29, 2006 A few decades ago in some conservative societies in the world, marriage was seen as a serious matter, thus making the nuptials an extraordinary event depending on how much one could afford for such a festive occasion. Mention the word divorce and some people will cringe at the thought provoking notion. As we all know, it all begins when two people meet, fall in love and later realise that they cannot not live without the other. When this revelation becomes more and more clear, the two parties in the relationship start contemplating marriage, especially if they want to be legally bound for the rest of their lives, to each other. Today, while marriage is still a serious issue for many people among us, are some people abusing the power of marriage? They could be if they do not take the matter seriously enough or look at it as a means of self improvement/advancement. Take the matter of immigration for example. It is known that if some immigrants want to become a resident of whatever country they have emigrated to, there are several ways to accomplish their objective. In the US, there are several ways. One can try to get a company to hire him or her, but in order to do that, the company would have to prove that it cannot find an American citizen who has the skill the immigrant has. Something that seems rather impossible, doesn’t it? Or one could come in as a gifted athlete. One does not have to look too far these days to see how many foreign born athletes there are in the NBA or other sectors of the sporting world today for evidence of that. Or one should have a special skill that no other American citizen has, and in a country with millions of people in it such as the US, how does one go about knowing if the skill he/she has is not already had by a US citizen? Should the immigrant who wants to become a US resident take a poll? That too seems impossible. Another way is to have a member of one’s immediate family, a brother or sister, or parent who is a US citizen file a petition for the immigrant. Something that could take years, depending on which country one is from. There is a quota system involved. Another way is to come in as a refugee if one’s country is at war with another, they seek what is known as asylum. There are many other ways, but these are the more familiar ones. One more popular way is through marriage, and as this way became more and more popular over time, some people have been known to abuse it no end. Many of them got married not because they really fell in love and wanted to. Of course there are some people who did meet, fall in love and marry for the right reasons, but those are the few. The ones who did not do so for the right reasons did so because they wanted to aid the immigrant to a quicker way of obtaining US residency. Then love followed if the two decided they wanted to stay together after the immigrant got his/her residency situation fixed. Something many people frown upon up to this day, especially those who hold marriage in high regard. One might even be tempted to ask the question, was it immigration that made this way the easier way to obtain residency? Because it is known to be the fastest way possible to obtain it. This writer believes people should get married because they truly want to, not because they want to aid some one to a faster way of obtaining residency for his or her country. ------------ About the author: Born and raised in the former British colony of Trinidad & Tobago, Judy Ramsook came to the US in the mid eighties where she attended San Antonio College and the University Of Texas At San Antonio.
