Sandra The Plain Jane

By Brian Michael Barbeito
July 28, 2006

The woman came out of the pharmacy and she was dressed in the pharmacy issue pants and jacket that all the workers wore there. It was not a smart white jacket and pants, with a nametag, like the other franchise drugstores, because this drugstore was not like those. It was located in a blue-collar area, and her pants were almost like worker pants, just dark green, no pleats, and no frills. She was like her clothing, in that she was a very understated person. She hopped on a mountain bike, and rode off, as she was going to make a coffee run. She kept her hair short, and never did her nails. She was pretty though nobody could tell, not even her. The sun was setting, and it was humid out. There was not even a breeze that came along strong enough to help much, though a few tried. She peddled off. She came back with two coffees, and brought her bike into the store. Though thirty-five years old, this was the only job she had. She had a mundane life, though she did not know it. She was satisfied. She did not read the papers, but did watch the news sometimes. She had a high school education and that was it. She did not date because she was a lesbian, and could never let her family and few friends know this. Therefore, she had managed to just suppress that part of her personal life. Earlier, it had been difficult, but she had gotten used to being and living this way. She was white, and came from a small town that was mostly white, and had only a few token families of other races. She was suspicious of other races, as in her town and upbringing there had always been an undercurrent of racism, and this went unquestioned always.

One day though, something happened that would change her life forever. Well, it was someone, that happened. She was stocking the shelves and heard a voice call out behind her. ‘ Could you tell me what section the hair dye is in?’ She turned around to answer and fell in love at first site. She looked into the eyes of the woman who had asked, and felt a rush of energy burn through her stomach and up to her heart. It was as if she was being electrocuted and it felt great. She felt that one inner energy rushing through her. There were other sensations, both physical and emotional. She had forgotten what question the lady had asked, who was now smiling a warm and generous smile, as if she had understood, as if there was now some inside joke. ‘ Hair dye,’ said the customer, ‘ where is the hair dye?’ The drug store woman, whose name was Sandra, got off the small stepladder, and walked her to the section. They began talking about small things like how humid it had been lately, and how there had been not enough rain. It turned out that the lady with the nice smile was passing though town. Sandra wanted to say something more than she was able to say, and to perhaps figure out a way, some way, any way, to see this woman again. Other thoughts flooded her mind too. She wondered if they had met before somewhere. She wondered if the woman liked men or women. However, she had no idea as to what she could do. Therefore, after the woman thanked her for her help, she just said, ‘ You are welcome.’ Sandra went back to her small ladder and slowly began stocking the shelves again. It was difficult to get her hands to hold the items. She felt weakened. She glanced out the window as the woman left the store and walked to her car. She got in and drove away. Sandra never saw the woman again, but something in her had been awakened that she did not know existed. She continued in her life, much the same as before. Riding the bicycle to get the coffee, among other thing, was different though. She looked at the people she passed differently. She wondered sometimes, if this or that person was in love, and to what extent, and how it had happened.
