Helping Fred Smith Write Clearly

By John L. Waters
July 27, 2006

In this recent article Fred Smith concludes his critique of John Waters by stating:
"He [John Waters] seems like a basically nice guy too, but some of his empathy is a bit misplaced, and his dislike for humanism, atheism, and yes, science as an institution and even science as it comprises the folks who practice it, is overly simplistic, misguided, silly, mean spirited, and often, wrong."

Whew!! Fred needs some help with his writing. The convoluted sentence just quoted needs a bit of simplification. Furthermore, the sentence is a poof not a proof because Fred gives no examples to back up his multiple subjective claims.

There are more problems in Fred's writing about John Waters. For one thing, in his writing Fred often seems deceptive and confused. To give one example, (1) Fred writes that his own personal "writing style of late has been to adopt the writing style of those to whom I'm replying." This statement is deceptive, confusing, and misleading because he is replying to me and in my previous article concerning abortion I do not insert any neologisms. Fred, on the other hand, has been feeling rather cocky and he has been cracking jokes and coining neologisms, as for example his bizarre neologism "unindisherdisherouter." To me, at least, this neologism has no clear meaning. The fact is often a neologism is coined and employed by someone who has lost intellectual clarity and has become more or less irrational. In my own articles concerning the abortion issue I try to be lucid and clear, not deceptive, confusing, misleading, or irrational.

(2) Another way Fred is being confusing, misleading, and deceptive is illustrated in his article of July 19, when in poor taste he keeps making light about aborted fetuses and the people who empathize with such doomed humans. In Oh How I Weep For Those Innocent Millions Of Murdered [Aborted] Babies! Fred didn't make it clear that this article is really about stem cell research. Perhaps in his neologism-prone lapse of rationality Fred Smith expects that John Waters is reading his mind so that Fred doesn't feel the need to be clear in his writing. As a staunch humanist and a foursquare skeptic, however, Fred can't really believe such a thing. Anyhow, in all innocence the moment I read Fred's article about aborted fetuses I thought about nascent human lives being snuffed out without anyone coming to their defense. I think that many other people would have been thinking the same thing while reading that same article.

(3) Here's a third example of Fred's confusion and deception. Fred suggests in his writing that John Waters is against science or dislikes science. That's no more logical than saying that John Waters is against cars because John is against of drunks driving cars. My opinion is that certain aspects of modern science, and certain workers in science need to improve. I support innovative science. This article isn't the place for me to develop that idea, however.

Moving on in my response to Fred Smith, since he has brought up the subject of stem cell research I've taken time to find and read articles about stem cell research. I've also learned that medical scientists are searching for new sources of stem cells so that medical science will not need to kill human life to get stem cells. Here are three articles in which you can read about this topic:

1. Baby and Wisdom Teeth Could be Banked for Stem Cells

2. Testicles reportedly used to make stem cells

3. Fat stem cells turned into muscle in experiment

In my recent articles I've not said that I am against stem cell research. I also note that in many of his U-K articles Fred Smith demonstrates that he is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about modern scientific discoveries, and so I suggest that Fred write an informative article about alternative sources of stem cells. I've seen Fred write well. He just needs to take time revising his work.

Innovative medical science will move stem cell research forward. Here is a quote from a recent article about stem cells and the recent stem cell controversy:

What have been the latest developments in the stem cell controversy?

"There is ongoing research involving adult stem cells as well as stem cells extracted from umbilical tissue. Already this research has resulted in some effective experimental treatments for certain conditions. Some animal research suggests that techniques could be developed to make adult stem cells from the same specialized tissues that embryonic stem cells do."

Finally, in response to the many Lord Russell quotations Fred Smith presents, there is a deeper and creepier side to Lord Russell. For example, here's a pair of Russell quotes that might make your skin crawl when you read them together:

(1) "What science cannot tell us, mankind cannot know."

(2) "I am looking forward very much to getting back to Cambridge, and being able to say what I think and not to mean what I say: two things which at home are impossible. Cambridge is one of the few places where one can talk unlimited nonsense and generalities without anyone pulling one up or confronting one with them when one says just the opposite the next day." Letter to Alys Pearsall Smith, who became his first wife (1893); published in The Selected Letters of Bertrand Russell, Volume 1: The Private Years (1884-1914), edited by Nicholas Griffin.
