July 27, 2006 I really must thank Israel for attacking Hezbollah in Lebanon. It was Israel’s bombing of the Beirut Airport and subsequent ground assault that finally took the word “rape” out of the barrage of banners, headline stories and leads splattered like raindrops upon the front pages of the only non-Muslim-yet-pro-terrorist newspaper available to American soldiers over the past two weeks! (Gee! Was that sentence too long?) For two weeks, apparently with having nothing better to bash the United States Military than a continual repetition of alleged atrocities by American soldiers, I was forced to read in the boldest of prints possible, banner headlines declaring the decadence of GIs. BANNER – Saturday, July 1st, 2006: “Five GIs accused of rape, killings in Iraq” BANNER – Sunday, July 2nd, 2006: “Accused GIs reportedly plotted rape, slayings” BOLD PAGE 3 HEADLINE – Monday, July 3rd, 2006: “Sunni Arab group condemns report of rape, slayings” Pause: All three of the aforementioned pointed me to repetitious allegations and accusations. None of the articles were particularly noteworthy except for the “Five GIs” part and the so-called “Sunni Arab Group” which turned out to be just another group of former Saddam boot-kissers who have had a gripe about America’s so-listed occupation since day one. I read recently about 10 ballplayers allegedly raping an 11-year-old but I’m sure that was not relegated to banner headline status for 2 consecutive weeks in any other media outlet. BANNER – Tuesday, July 4th, 2006: “Veteran charged in rape, murder of Iraqi woman” BOLD PAGE 3 HEADLINE – Wednesday, July 5th, 2006: “Iraq wants review of U.S. troops’ immunity” 1ST SENTENCE: “Iraq’s prime minister called Wednesday for an independent investigation into an alleged rape-slaying by U.S. soldiers.” Pause: Another banner and then a half-page story concerning “independent investigations” which would be “independent” of any military oversight. This is a lesson learned from liberal American politics. When the actual or ongoing investigations don’t get you the head of someone from the Bush Administration, throw several “independent” investigations at the situation and see what crap sticks to which wall. It is Abu Graib all over again. Aside: TOP FRONT PAGE BANNER PLUG FOR PAGE 7 STORY – July 9th, 2006: “Watchdog: Number of White Supremacists in Military Rising” Pause: The rape stories were given a single day of grace here to allow a banner declaring a larger number of soldiers who can be labeled “white supremacists” Sarcasm: We probably need to allow gays to serve more openly in the military now to give the military more of a kinder and gentler posture before the press. We sure don’t want everyone believing the Army is naught but a group of white supremacists now, do we? BANNER – Monday, July 10th, 2006: “5 more soldiers charged in Iraq rape-slayings case” BOLD PAGE 3 HEADLINE – Tuesday, July 11th, 2006: “Names of 5 GIs charged in alleged rape-murder are released” BANNER – Wednesday, July 12th, 2006: “Video claims GIs were killed to avenge Iraq rape, slaying” Pause: More repetition of the same accusations and allegations and then the story is picked up by the insurgency and the terrorists begin claiming that two soldiers they had captured and mutilated were revenge for the alleged atrocities of soldiers who have yet to face any kind of court. The damn terrorists have already executed soldiers who were not even involved in the alleged incident. I suppose no one bothered to tell the terrorists that America has a death penalty; even though we are extremely arbitrary about using it on anyone because we are more terribly afraid we might execute some poor innocent homicide killer or serial rapist. Respite: BANNER – Thursday, July 13th, 2006: “Army to end exclusive deal with Halliburton” Aside: HOORAY! But I’ll bet that still doesn’t get Dick Cheney off any hooks. Then on the 14th of July Israel attacked Lebanon’s airport and all the banner headlines since have directed me to articles bashing the evil and over-reactionary Israelis and that rotten President Bush who won’t demand Israel stop disproportionately defending herself. but have no fear. The list of atrocities by American soldiers grows every day.
