July 24, 2006 Hezbollah means "party of God". They are also considered quite influential in the political and social arena in Lebanon. The Hezbollah operate hospitals, schools, and major agricultural services as well as a satellite television station named Al-Manar. They were founded in 1982 and are thought to be close allies of Iran and Syria. (www.cfr.org) Hezbollah have claimed responsibility for numerous kidnappings, suicide bombings, hijackings, and border raids into Israel. Their main premise is to obliterate Israel. This premise has been supported by Iran, Syria, and Palestine who have been thought to have provided them with money and arms to further this cause. (http://news.bbc.co.uk) Hezbollah claims to be several thousand strong and are known to be operational in Europe, Africa, South America, and North America. Their home base is Lebanon and is made up from radical Islamic Shiites that are sidled with Iran and Syria. They are well organized and led. (www.cfr.org) In 2005 Hezbollah won eight more seats in the Lebanese Parliament. They now control 23 seats out of the 128 positions available in their government. In addition to these postings they also have two members in high ranking positions as Ministers of Government. (www.cfr.org) Hassan Nasrallah is considered their senior political leader. He is a very capable, ruthless, and educated man who studied Shiite Theology in both Iran and Iraq and held high ranking military postings in Hezbollah since their inception. Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Fadallah is their spiritual leader. He works closely with Hassan Nasrallah in planning and organizing their various plots worldwide. (www.cfr.org) The latest conflict between Israel and Lebanon is thought to figure prominently into what many refer to as WWIII along with Bush's war with Iraq. No doubt Bush's war with Iraq has ignited hostilities in the Middle-East and the end seems to be no where in sight. But how much is enough and at what price does America continue this folly? Many want the Bush Administration to put pressure on members of both warring factions for a cease fire. Saudi Arabia, our close ally, is the latest in asking for such consideration. However, he (Bush) is reluctant to do so without achieving his goal of destroying all terrorist cells in the entire world. Does this hard line fuel the Middle-Eastern fire? Is this even a realistic goal? I believe it does fuel this fire and continue to spark more acts of desperation on both parties. Each time Bush opens his mouth he creates another enemy for the United States. Could a little diplomacy help here? I say absolutely, along with the end of fighting in Iraq which has done nothing but bankrupt the United States and kill an entire generation of people between the United States and Iraq. The mounting numbers of innocent deaths and destruction of entire countries that previously housed ancient architectural wonders alongside modern marvels should be enough to cause any reasonable person to consider taking this war further and risking certain peril, but Bush and his merry cabinet of warmongers. It is time the people of the United States say enough is enough and press our congress people/state representatives to remove Bush from office via impeachment. We need to work toward creating peace, respect, and prosperity around the globe instead of war and hate. We need to get this Administrations frivolous spending under control now and not later because the future of all persons in the United States depends on it. We need to give diplomacy and decorum a chance to work in the international arena before shooting from the hip or using the knee jerk reaction Bush and his cronies are so accustomed to. The time is NOW!
