July 24, 2006 The first four paragraphs of “Orlando Set to Shatter Homicide Record” by Travis Reed of the AP remind me of the word “perspective”. I see the entire hubbub over Rush Limbaugh being detained in Florida for possession of a single container of that very dangerous substance “Viagra” and rarely read of the hundreds of illegal drug smugglers squeezing through tunnels or traversing the many desert trails crossing the Mexican and Canadian borders with their tons of cocaine and marijuana. Every day I read of homicide killings of innocent Iraqis at the hands of radical Iranian- supported homicide killers. Only today do I see a story that might add some perspective. The size of the Nation of Iraq has been likened to the size of the State of California. Still fewer than 3000 American soldiers have died over a 4 year period of sustained terrorist actions. The terrorists, knowing that any American is a “hard” target, instead go after the soft targets of civilian markets, funerals and mosques, ensuring they wreak the maximum damage possible to blame against the “occupation forces” of the coalition. Now read this paragraph from Mr. Reed’s article: “So far this year Orlando has recorded 33 homicides _ just three short of a 1982 record, and with almost half the year left. Continued killings at this pace could put the city made famous by Mickey Mouse uncomfortably among the top 15 for the highest per-capita murder rate in the country.” I have made reservations in this city for my vacation. Now, I don’t know if it will be safer for me to stay in the Middle East! I was looking forward to going to one particular place I haven’t been to since my twin sons were one-year-olds. They are now 26-years-old and you can do the math. The old song goes: “Should I stay or should I go……If I go there will be trouble….If I stay there will be double…..” so I don’t know if I want to leave the desert for the dangerous streets of an American tourist trap! These murder descriptions from Mr. Reed’s article would almost make a Baghdad homicide killer jealous: “The first happened just after the New Year turned. An 18-year-old man lay bullet-riddled and dead on his street, apparently mistaken for another youth in a feud with two gun-wielding 20-somethings. Later that day it was a transient who bled to death near a homeless camp from a stab wound in the leg. Then a 22-year-old inexplicably shot in the back of the head, a 26-year-old gunned down in a drive-by and a 6- year-old apparent child abuse victim who died of severe head injuries.” This was just in Orlando, Florida! I know things like this happen every day in Baghdad, Iraq and that the excuses run the gamut. What excuses are offered to the poor residents of Orlando, Florida? Then you have those that might suggest that 33 killings aren’t so bad when you consider the overall costs of war. Then I might suggest to those who hold that perspective another paragraph by Mr. Reed who wrote: “Orlando certainly isn't the only area with rising bloodshed. FBI figures from 2005 released last month showed a 2.5 percent increase in violent crime nationwide _ the largest since 1991 _ and a 4.8 percent rise in murders. Jacksonville, Florida's murder capitol for 12 of the past 17 years is on track to hit more than 130 homicides for the first time in more than a decade. Washington, D.C., police this month called a crime emergency amid rising incidences of robberies and armed assaults, and Detroit is on pace to hit 460 slayings, a 22 percent increase over 2005.” So what excuses are offered in Jacksonville, or in Detroit or in Washington, D.C.? What excuses are offered nationwide in America where the annual murder rate far exceeds that of the entire Nation of Iraq? The American murder rate by Americans against Americans is greater than that of Arab against Arab. It almost makes you think that the religion of peace is actually somehow peaceful! At least we know the source of the killings in the war against terrorism. The radical pile of human garbage known as the Islamic insurgency doesn’t care about who they kill as long as they get credit from their god for killing supposed infidels. The Orlando police have part of the clue for their own neck or the country. Quote: “"People can attribute crime to failing schools, failing families. There's a bunch of sociological things you can put your finger on," said police Sgt. Rich Ring, head of Orlando's homicide investigation unit. "All we can do as police is say the biggest things are drugs and robbery, and we're going to take action to attack those issues." The police in most of America’s cities can take action against drugs and robbery. Most murderers can be located readily and even some of the more notorious serial killers mess up and get caught. In Iraq and other Muslim hot spots the murderers kill themselves when killing others. In America it just isn’t that easy to see the end result of justice. Most American murderers live to murder a second and a third time. It would be so much nicer if murderers would have instant attacks of conscience that caused them to immediately kill themselves. But no; there are too many people in America who have no perspective. The liberal “culture of death” that allows the withdrawal of feeding tubes, massive numbers of abortions and doctor assisted suicides without so much as a wink or a tear says: “War is bad, evil and something we should retreat from.” They say nothing of 40,000 plus driving deaths or 16,000 plus murders annually on American streets without a single hint of terrorist activity. They are more concerned about pulling soldiers who keep such figures from growing even larger away from the real battle’s front lines. Frankly, they worry me. It is almost like the idiots that attack modern Christianity. It isn’t Evangelical Christianity calling for the heads of infidels and killing cartoonists and film makers who make fun of their favorite prophet. You don’t need three guesses about which religion atheists (if they were not already part of the culture of death) should be trying to destroy. Yet, there isn’t a whole lot of perspective or common sense being used in that debate either. So Travis Reed’s article was interesting. It gave me pause and added something to my perspective. ------------ About the Author: Michael John McCrae has contributed over 500 articles to Useless-Knowledge.com.
