The Ubiquitous Consequence

By Joe Magoo
July 18, 2006

Recently a long time friend of mine visited me from NYC. Our conversations during that visit covered, for the most part, things political. One main feature of our dialogue was introduced by Tom, and it was the concept of 'unintended consequences'. At least, I was under the impression it was introduced as a concept.

For the past several months I've stayed away from news media reports and talking-heads; I was tired of the futility I felt in listening to the talk-fest. With the latest flare-up of hostilities in the Middle East, I started to ease myself back into the audience.

Lo and behold, in two days time, I realized that the subject of 'unintended consequences' had become a Secular Socialist talking point. (IE. It was used by Ellis Henican and Elinor Clift) Whether Tom was aware of this or not I can not say. Ironically, however, one of his complaints to me was that the Republicans won't dialogue, but simply regurgitate talking points.

Tom engaged me in "thought exercises", which, in my opinion, evinced circular reasoning, but were to the effect that we shouldn't take actions to stop wrong doing if those actions caused a worse wrong to occur. With this axiom I philosophically agreed. There can be moral culpability if we know our actions will cause worse results, and moral negligence if there's a strong possibility of worse results.

With the realization that the 'unintended consequences' concept had become a Secular Socialist talking point, I decided to, in this article, move the concept into the real world.

Simply put, everything we do can, and probably does, have unintended consequences. Of course, when actions are carried out by nations the consequences are broader and deeper. Because life is so dynamic, and NOT a theory, the possibility of unintended consequences abound.

Tom and I spent two days driving around the East end of Long Island in his car. This is real life. During that time we passed through a number of small towns and villages gabbing and taking in the sights. At any time, as I passed through these towns and villages, a child could have shot out from between parked cars, and I would have crushed that child dead.

If a dead child was one result of our otherwise mundane, but real life trip, then this death was an unintended consequence. Although I was at the wheel of the car I could not be morally responsible for what took place. If, however, I was speeding through these towns I would be, at least, morally negligent, and even legally responsible to a degree.

Degrees are, in fact, what real life is about. I could have eliminated the possibility of my driving over this child simply by not driving. I could have taken Tom's hypothetical thought exercises seriously and pulled the car over to the side of the road. This would have been silly of me.

It is fascinating to me that the Secular Socialists are now "concerned" with the serious down-side of good intentions. Yes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. What is fascinating is that this was the warning given by 'Conservatives' when 'Liberals' of the 1960's began in earnest to show their courage to be new. With 40 years of evidence piled up in heaps of social pain, one would think the Secular Socialists would be the last to bring up the subject of 'unintended consequences'.

With large parts of America's social fabric ripped and rotted, I would expect the Secular Socialists to be embarrassed to talk of the dangers of good intentions. Yet, probably because there needs to be no shame with them, they lecture Judeo-Christians about the unintended consequences of our actions.

The Secular Socialists give themselves away with the voice of Jacob. They, with the voice of Judas, ask Jesus to show concern for the poor. With the voice Satan they ask Jesus to rule the world...THEIR WAY.

This latest talking point (Viz. Unintended Consequences) is just the Secular Socialist's latest slight-of-hand. Taking heed of their warning would simply mean pulling the social, ethical and moral car over to the side of the road to avoid running over the child. Reality, and the past 40 years, shows us that they want to, in fact, get in the driver's seat because they deem themselves the smarter drivers.

Reality also shows us that they are, at least, morally negligent once behind the wheel-of-state. Note the near destruction of the Black neighborhood. Note the death of millions of Fetuses. Note the public schools with metal detectors at the entrances. Note the businesses that are little more than welfare providers, who happen to do a bit of manufacturing on the side.

The "progress" of the Secular Socialist is little more than the destabilization stage of a Judeo-Christian Capitalist culture. Their intent is to have us all run to father State for salvation; do you really think salvation can come from anywhere else? Their language is religious and full of concern. They want us to be "wise", like themselves, and watch for the unintended consequences of our actions.

While the social pathologies of present day America are branded to the backs of the Secular Socialist's 40 years of good intentions, they stand, full faced, toward us and warn of life's unintended consequences. This displays a perverseness and arrogance that only a poet or devil could put into language.

ALL OF LIFE, personal and political, has unintended consequences. We are, first, morally responsible for our intended consequences. Then we are, by degrees, responsible for probable unintended consequences. We are in no way responsible for what crazy, amoral sociopaths plan in their sick minds to do once good people confront them.

ALL HUMANS are susceptible to the sting of unintended consequences. It does little to point out the concomitant things of real life, while real bad people do real bad things unchallenged. Some bear the sting of reality with a broken heart, others believe, shamelessly, the stings are merit badges.

On D-day, in 1945, we bombed the hell out of France in order to eliminate Hitler. Whatever the consequences, we would and should eliminate Hitler in that fashion today. That's real life. Theories are for the Secular Socialists, who desire to bring us a heaven-on-earth...like they did in Germany, Russia and China.
