Defining The New God

By John L. Waters
July 18, 2006

This article gives no definitive final answer to What or Who exactly IS God, but this article is a start. Let's begin with a recent U-K article by Keith Cantrell. In his article "The Gospels In The Language Of Jesus" U-K columnist Keith Cantrell suggests that humanity needs a new Idea of God. More specifically, Keith says, "... we should be wise enough to move beyond its [referring to The Gospels and the rest of the New Testament] archaic attitudes and develop an entirely new and modern vision of our place in the universe." Yah Yah. I agree.

Medical scientists are actually discovering that God actually exists in the human brain or at least God is sensed in the human brain, that is to say, certain parts of the human brain, when stimulated, produce sensations which have long been identified as virtuous, yes, even holy. This is why, in creating the new definition of God, sometimes identified as the Summum Bonum, Providence, the holy Presence, or the Creator, we will want to take these medical findings into account and leave room in the new religion for additional related scientific findings. The new Idea of God will not run counter to science. After all, humans are a part of creation and science is an activity that many humans engage in, and so science is a part of creation. Moreover, if God is the Creator of everything, then God is creating science through humanity and science is part of God's world.

My English, like your English, is sometimes misleading. Moreover, we do not have to define The Highest Virtue as a personality. Furthermore, If we are going to define God, we probably should define God using a universal language that grows without dying out. We won't get caught, then, in the trap of using a dying language such as Aramaic, so that in a century or two our new teaching about God will have to be translated into Greek or some other language that is quite unlike Aramaic. Our increased wisdom will suggest this need to use a universal language that doesn't become obsolete. But then, what language should it be? Well, consider the language of arithmetic and geometry. Mathematics is, after all, the precision language of physics and cosmology.

In fact, it's already been said that "God is a mathematician." Was this a saying of Moses? Or did Jesus say this? What about Mohammed? Well, no. These old teachers didn't say "God is a mathematician. So who first said "God is a mathematician"? Let's enquire. Using a search engine we find that the statement was made by the mathematician Paul Dirac.

Here is the quote, taken from "On Scientists and Science."
"It seems to be one of the fundamental features of nature that fundamental physical laws are described in terms of mathematical theory of great beauty and power, needing quite a high standard of mathematics for one to understand it. You may wonder: Why is nature constructed along these lines? One can only answer that our present knowledge seems to show that it is so constructed. We simply have to accept it. One could perhaps describe the situation by saying that God is a mathematician of a very high order, and He used very advanced mathematics in constructing the universe. Our feeble attempts at mathematics enable us to understand a bit of the universe, and as we proceed to develop higher and higher mathematics we can hope to understand the universe better."
(Paul Dirac)

If you aren't yet very comfortable using mathematics, when it comes to finding God, well, even if you presently argue that there is no Providence, there is evidence that you already have Providence in your own body! This evidence is introduced in the article God and the Brain. Take some time and read this article. The embedded short articles present varied research projects which help modern people understand many if not all of the early prophets of God in terms of still-evolving human brain activity. Not all the answers are yet in on this issue.

What scientists definitely don’t want to do in developing Mr. Cantrell’s "entirely new vision of ourselves" is engineer out of existence or breed out of existence the non-rational braininess that makes a vision or a dream image whisper equations (as in the case of Srinivasa Ramanujan) or produce an invention idea in a dream (as in the case of Elias Howe) or cause a research physicist to suddenly deviate from an experimental plan and produce a breakthrough result worthy of a Nobel Prize (as in the case of Enrico Fermi.) Scientists might even define God as creative genius or creative inspiration. At present, however, both Church schools and secular public schools discourage irrationality and emphasize retentive memory, reasoning, and numerical calculation. This SIN needs to be corrected.

In defining the new vision of Humanity or Providence, educators and doctors need to make the definition as useful as possible, not just for Christians, for Moslems, and other religious persons, but for persons who presently don’t use any traditional idea of God. If the new teaching isn’t more useful than the old, why should people v ever accept it? Moreover, as this wiser humanity moves out into space, it will not be to gain a military advantage over all or part of the Earth base. By that time the long-envisioned and long-prophesied Messiah-peacemaker will have come and rendered humanity (and not just the Jews) safe, sane, and providential.

If you argue that "There is no God," well, this may be because the traditional ideas of God don’t seem necessary to explain physical phenomena. There is still the realm of human sensibility and human inspiration, however. Explaining these phenomena falls within the scope of education, psychology, or medicine. Wise people, therefore, will not equate non-rational intelligence with dangerous insanity. In fact, many historical breakthroughs required the extra non-rational intelligence that produces flashes of insight and other episodes of irrationality, as for example in the inventor Elias Howe, in the mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, and in the physicist Enrico Fermi. Mastering this non-rational extra intelligence and integrating it with the intelligence that is presently emphasized in schools, is the essential new science or the essential vision of the new science.

In concluding this article it needs to be said that the numerous and various literary inputs to Useless Knowledge Magazine present a large infusion of ideas, facts, arguments, and sentiments that may be combined in a vast number of ways with other ideas facts, arguments, and sentiments encountered in homeless shelters, on university campuses, in stores doing business, in magazines or in books, or in a public forum or online, or even in personal dreams and visions. The time and effort required to sort through and combine the most useful of these disparate bits of flotsam and jetsam is Herculean. Certainly this labor is different from getting a PhD! Nevertheless, just relying on your own vision or dream might seem appropriate, but despite numerous such self-proclaimed prophets and spiritual advisors, tradition-based humanity has not produced the lucid synthesis needed to originate and teach the essential idea of whole brain integration to the younger generations. More than a frequently victorious military commander or a wealthy business whiz turned charming and intimidating dreamer is needed to do the real peace work. Rich as he is, Adi Da can't do it, either, because he doesn't have the working concept. Not even Bill Gate's billions of dollars can buy intelligence. He could, however, support the innovative peace research, and help involve more people in this work.

Before any big money is involved in this project, however, more little peace-work-collaborator-integrators will be found. Like me. I am a small person, like a tiny spark.
