July 17, 2006 Normally when I have a problem with a political group, it is someone on the left. I think that is reasonable. After all the left is pretty lame and normal people should have a problem with them. But today I think it's time to take some self proclaimed conservatives to the woodshed. Believing themselves to be the "real" or "original" conservatives, they want to turn the clock back to 1930. The odd thing is that they really aren't conservative. Look at what they believe in and you see that they have far more in common with the left than they do with the right. Paleo's like Pat Buchanan, and Charley Reese(a fascist if there ever was one) want to go back to the days when America had sky high tariffs to keep out those horrible foreign products. On the war against terrorism: They are against it. There is an undercurrent of racism in their opposition to the war. They believe that Koreans, and Muslims could never be a threat to the U.S. and that such people are incapable of democratic rule.(John Derbyshire's most recent column on nationalreview.com says that we give terrorists too much credit, and they don't constitute a serious threat. Reese's latest rant says the Stalinist Kim Jong Il and his missile launches don't pose any problems. Reese is also a big fan of Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez and his clamping down on freedom there.) I bet there were people in 1938 that said imperial Japan could never pull off an attack against the United States and the Hitlers Third Reich could never conquer Europe. I wonder how they explain democracy in South Korea, Japan,Taiwan, the Phillipines, Iraq, India, Indonesia ,etc( a rather new democracy, but a real one in the worlds largest muslim country)? After all these people are not supposed to be capable of any kind of democratic rule. Dictatorships are all they are good for, so in their minds we should pick a strong man friendly to American interests and let him do what he wants. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that what got us in this problem in the first place? We supported the Shah of Iran and that brought the Islamo fascists to power that are waging war all across the middle east. We support that vile monarchy in Riyadh, and 15 out of 19 hijackers were from their kingdom. We support the Mubarak autocracy in Egypt and that makes us rather unpopular in Alexandria and Cairo(not to mention the rest of the country). Another pathology they have, and share with many on the left, is anti semitism. Oh, they disguise it as criticism of Israeli policy, but it sounds so insincere when you have Buchanan raving about cabals of Jewish neo cons secretly controlling the government to get us to do Israel's bidding. It sounds insincere because hating Israel while denying that you hate Jews is like saying you hate Japan, and everything they stand for but in no way does that make you anti Japanese. And lambasting Israeli policy while they would never tolerate foreigners criticizing American policy goes beyond hypocritical to down right insane. It's time that these not so conservative, cons got drummed out of the conservative movement.
