July 12, 2006 Signs are everywhere, the great liberal machine is collapsing. In the US polls indicate that George Bush is not too well liked but at the same time has no likely liberal replacement. Canada, long a strong hold of liberalism, has just elected a conservative Prime Minister, Steven Harper. Germany has also elected a new centre right Chancellor, Andrea Merkle. France, that bastion of socialism, while still adhering to the party line, is now a de facto conservative state regarding social policy with (among other things), the banning of certain items of religious clothing worn by non western immigrants and their offspring. The United States of America, the country that gave the world Haight Ashbury- Woodstock,-the 1969 Democratic party Presidential nomination riots-Janis Joplin-Bob Dylan- has turned 180 degree, going in the opposite direction from that followed for the past two decades. Why is this ? The Greek Historian Thucydides has stated that in his travels he had never seen a city without a city wall(a rarity in the days of the city state sieges )but never ever had he run across a city without a god. As in the days of the classical Greeks, we also have cities with no walls (armies), but all cities still have their own gods. (Albeit the cities have extended their reach). In the USA, Europe and Russia some still follow the god of the ancient Hebrews, some follow the one of the later Christians, while others have evolved a series of gods based upon the religion of the new power base bought about by universal suffrage. As the previous gods declined in power new ones filled the vacuum, as no civilized person can live without religion and remain sane. There are now gods based upon the entertainment industry ranging from Madonna, to Superman, to X-man, to the Church of Oprah, to Environmentalism, on up to UFO-ology to name a few. Some seem to be following the pattern begun by the Greeks where beings having certain great supernatural powers interact with mankind, sometimes for their own ends, sometimes out of pure altruism. Curiously, these new gods have appeared at the time of a variety of social ills ranging from drug addiction to sexually transmitted diseases, and various other new forms of mass insanity. Which preceded which? Did we get the new gods first, or are they a response to the various plagues that have bedeviled twentieth and twenty first century humankind? Officially the US is the freest, most democratic country on the face of the planet. In the US and other western countries just try to question the causes of the recent social decay and one is hemmed in on all sides by a bureaucracy that seems to side with anarchy. Officials seem afraid to confront the problem of criminal organizations trafficking in the products of mass insanity. At the lower levels government policies are so transparent as to laughable.' The crime wave among minorities is put down to "improper storage of gun collections, lax US border controls, lack of opportunity etc", any thing else but that which is glaringly obvious. Then again how can they do other wise. A lot of city and province (state) level administrators seem to agree with the values of the social revolution of the late twentieth century. Some must no doubt be hunting out long forgotten news sheets put out in their youth espousing some type of revolutionary action. Who can admit that their whole life has been based upon nonsense? Those responsible for erecting the new system seem to be bravely and stubbornly bluffing their way through as they observe its collapse. Zeus, Delphi, Heracles were well tried and seemed to have given the Greek people a sense of unity. The Hebrew and Christian gods seem also to have given their descendants a sense of unity. Not so the new gods. These seem to engender a hatred of one citizen for the other not of the same religious bent. In particular they obliquely reflect a type of grudging respect for the earlier gods as most of their attacks seem to be concentrated upon those of Christian persuasion. Hardly ever do they do they attack the Buddhist, Hindu, or Zoroastrian.
