July 6, 2006 I should never read the newspaper. I should be content reading internet articles but I always grab a paper because I need the comfort of “Hagar the Horrible”, “Red and Rover”, “Dilbert” and “Beetle Bailey”. One can only look at computer screens for so long too. Then there are days where you don’t get near your personal desktop and yet need to have printed words to pass the time during any long pause in routine. After working through the sports section and the comics; the daily “SU/DO/KU” puzzle, the “CRYPTOQUIP”, the “JUMBLE”, and the Crossword, the only thing remaining is the news and commentary sections. That is when I break out the scissors. So why did I cut out: “Black-owned companies’ numbers take off” by Stephen Ohlemacher of the AP? Because the statistics cited in the article interested me greatly quote: “The number of black-owned businesses grew by 45 percent from 1997-2002 more than four times the national rate for all businesses…” Quote: “Revenues from black-owned businesses increased by 25 percent during the period, to about $89 billion.” Quote: “Blacks as a group still trail whites in education and income…In 1950 only 14 percent of black adults had high school diplomas, compared with 36 percent of whites…The gap narrowed by 2000 when 72 percent of black adults had at least a high school diploma compared with 84 percent of whites.” I just wanted to know at the time (April 22, 2006) why we were not reading more stories about Black success in America from the mainstream press outlets. I did watch 6 minutes of CNN the other day and was told again how the United States military can’t seem to stop committing war crimes. The allegation list is growing. The investigation list is growing and Americans are still not getting the stories of success or heroism that are the larger side of the media coin. But back on April 27th I cut out: “Iraqi official condemns new al-Zarqawi video” by Thomas Wagner of the AP. This was a story about the video where al-Zarqawi called for all Sunnis to rise up against the Shiites and the Kurdish Muslims. The very first sentence began: “Iraqis condemned terror mastermind…” But the “terror mastermind” is dead and I don’t need to bash on a dead coward whose sole claim to master-mind-ism called for the continual killing of innocent people until the world worshipped his significant other; Osama bin Laden. Only a couple of days later [30 April] I cut out: “Al Zawahri: Bombings have “broken” U.S.” by Lee Keath of the AP. It continues to amaze me how Al-Zarqawi, Al Zawahri and bin Laden get more press than the United States military that managed to erase one of the scumbags. Such is media life I guess. But I cut that one out because of this quote: “Al-Qaida in Iraq “alone has carried out 800 martyrdom operations (suicide [homicide] attacks) in three years…and this is what has broken the back of American in Iraq,” al-Zawahri said.” And shortly after he said that al-Zarqawi became a toasted vegetable along with the other 800 deluded Islamic religionists looking for that virgin-infested paradise. On April 23rd I cut out: “Suicides in Army’s ranks at highest level since’93” by Lolita C. Baldor of the AP. I understand why articles like this show up these days. It is simply because anything that can be written to make military life impalpable to the public will be written. But I had a few thoughts. ONE: Of the 83 soldiers who committed suicide in 2005; the 67 in 2004 and the 60 in 2003 “the first year of the Iraqi war: How many of these individuals strapped bombs on themselves and took a bus loaded with schoolchildren with them to a phony paradise? My second thought was about the article’s military comparisons with the “civilian suicide rate” and how that probably is not a fair comparison. A fairer comparison might be the American Military suicide rate with that of the suicide rate of the enemy forces of terrorism. In three years 210 soldiers killed themselves compares to “800 martyrdoms” cited by al-Zawahri. When you take into account only 64 of those 210 soldiers actually saw service in Iraq while all 800 dead martyrs died in Iraqi streets I might again call for some perspective. I cut out a few short news articles like: “Church arson incidents climb to 10 in Phoenix”; wondering why there isn’t much being said on the television news about churches being burned down, until I realized that is another indication of liberal media bias against all things religious, especially Christian, and except Islam. Then there was: “Officials: Sex offenders overcrowding prisons”, where I thought that might be a good thing. If sex offenders are in prison they are only offending each other or they are swapping war stories about all the little children they took advantage of that ended them up in the slammer. But then out of St. Louis, Missouri I read: “12 boys, ages 6-8 accused of sex assault of an 8 year-old during school recess.” Teachers were fired, students were suspended and I was left wondering at what age that particular school began condom distribution. Two other articles with a public school theme caught my eye and my scissor blades: “Teacher apologized for macabre essay topic” was also from Missouri (St. Joseph) where “A high school teacher [asked] students to write about who they would kill and how they would do it.” No. This was not a class on “Creative Writing” but a class on “Industrial Technology” or “drafting”. “Drafting” murder plans is an interesting way to teach Industrial Technology. I am sure glad Michael Maxwell (the teacher) apologized for being so freaking stupid. Anyway the final article was: “Girl gets 12 years in poisoning” where Holley Sweeney (13 years old) was “ordered…to remain at the Hillcrest Girls School in Salem [Oregon] until she is 25…for slipping rat poison into [the] milk of two classmates” she wasn’t happy with. I just marvel at the state of public education in multicultural America! ------------ About the Author: Michael John McCrae has contributed over 500 articles to Useless-Knowledge.com.
