July 4, 2006 Today in America we celebrate our freedom. I think that with all of the fireworks, BBQ's and beer kegs we might actually forget what we are supposed to be celebrating. We have the right to disagree with our Government and with each other and we have the right to speak out and make these disagreements known to all and sundry. On the UK site we do all of the above and that's a very good thing. We exemplify what freedom is about when we write articles that express our opinions and when we disagree with what other's may say. The fact that the editor has given us a forum to do this means that he should be commended and so should the writers here at the UK site. We should also remember that with freedom comes responsibility and that means that we are NOT free to libel anyone or make accusations that we can't substantiate and it means that we have no right to lie about someone else unless we have proof that our words are accurate and can be documented. Unfortunately, that also happens on the UK site. Lately, it has been happening more frequently than usual and it has been relegated to a special section in the Rebuttal area. If one disagrees with the methods of certain individuals who refuse to show common courtesy and to refrain from libel we are called thin-skinned. Since when is fighting tyranny a sign of thin-skin? Since when is it okay to post accusations that are blatantly false and expect no one to react with outrage? I must have missed that part in the US Constitution because my take on our freedom involves taking responsibility and not shouting fire in a crowded building or the cyber equivalent of that behavior. Coming to this site to read and respond is always welcomed by any writer who wants their point of view discussed and taken seriously. Coming to this site to read a bunch of lies and accusations that have nothing to do with what we write is another matter entirely. I don't like every article on here and I don't agree with a lot of them. Sometimes I find them offensive and at times I feel as if I am being battered with religion and other political philosophies that I don't share. But, I welcome those differing points of view because I learn from them. They either reinforce my own beliefs, or teach me about something that I didn't know about. They all serve a purpose and should be welcomed and treated equally as to their importance. What should NOT be tolerated or treated with respect or given any credence at all are baseless personal attacks, and out-right lies that should not be here or anywhere else. When people make such false statements they are usually ostracized in society so most refrain from being quite so brave and forthright with their bullying tactics. This is not so on the Internet where people feel like they are anonymous and safe to say whatever they please and to harm whomever they chose to harm. They believe that there will be no consequences and no recourse for their actions but they are wrong. At least they should be wrong.... I have seen this type of childish and unintelligent behavior right here on the UK site and I have also seen those who fight against it rather than make excuses for it. It is what it is...ugly and useless information; NOT knowledge It should be recognized as such and removed from a site that desires legitimacy and credibility. Let's hope that those who understand this will prevail. ------------ About the author: Meri has a Medical/Legal background and is a former forensic researcher specializing in psychological profiling. https://www2.xlibris.com/bookstore/bookdisplay.asp?bookid=27335 Email: writers2@cox.net Comment on this article here! ------------ All articles are EXCLUSIVE to Useless-Knowledge.com.
