July 2, 2006 We all travel back to certain times in our lives when we hear certain music. Special times are easily recalled through the words of a song or tune. I find that lately there is a certain kind of sound that brings back memories or at least evokes feelings of the past. It's kind of like a poignant, lilting kind of tune...part lullaby and part nostalgia. I can't describe the sound here in mere words and I can't even think of a song to illustrate what I mean. A tune from another era or maybe from a time that I don't remember being a part of.....something nebulous and deeply felt. It can come from a few bars of music in a commercial or in the sounds of the bells at the church near my home. It can only consist of a few seconds of sound but it still makes me stop and listen and feel and remember. It's not a hymn or a popular tune nor is it anything that I really recognize or know the lyrics too; it's something else. A sound memory is the way I would describe it and every time it happens I smile. I tried to explain this feeling to someone recently and it caused a game of "Name That Tune", an old show where someone would sing a few bars of a song and the contestant would try to guess the name of the tune. Naturally, this didn't work because I am not recalling a specific song but a specific sound...something not easily identified unless you are listening to it at that very moment. One tune that I heard sounded like it was a sweet love song that could be from one lover to another and another reminded me of a special moment with a parent. A few days ago I heard a few bars of a muffled trumpet solo and it reminded me of an early jazz festival that I had attended as a young woman in my 20's. The sounds of am alto saxophone reminded me of a high school prom where they played my favorite song, "The Nearness Of You". Sound memories......short, sweet and not always identifiable. ------------ About the author: Meri has a Medical/Legal background and is a former forensic researcher specializing in psychological profiling. https://www2.xlibris.com/bookstore/bookdisplay.asp?bookid=27335 Email: writers2@cox.net Comment on this article here! ------------ All articles are EXCLUSIVE to Useless-Knowledge.com.
