On "Retreat"

Sometimes the burdens of the world become too great. The concentration begins to fade and the anger sometimes grows. Stress is almost a given when your taxes unexpectedly go higher or you suddenly find milk at four dollars a gallon. You begin worrying if the paycheck will still cover the costs of simply living.

It isn’t right that any Christian worry. Jesus had many comforting words for his people concerning the lilies of the field, the sparrows and the meek of the earth. He took a few fish and a few pieces of bread and solves all the worries of the disciples who were concerned over the feeding of thousands of people. How many times did the Psalmist enjoin the people to “Fret not…”?

Well, we Christians need those kinds of reminders. We are continually surrounded by the temptations of the world and friends and family who want our company and companionship in places that Christians shouldn’t probably be found in. Sometimes we are very careful; knowing and remembering the admonishments of God. Sometimes we fail. We let the worries over bills and such overrule our better judgment. We might drink that extra beer or smoke something “funny” or do something otherwise stupid to take our minds away from our struggles.

Then there is the “Retreat”.

The Retreat is that time for you. It is a time to renew your relationship with God. There is no need for drugs or alcohol or any other stimuli. You and your Bible and your prayers and your sense of Spirit can commune with God directly; without the interruptions brought into life by stress and non-spiritual influences.

The retreat can be as long as it needs to be and can be conducted anywhere. It can be conducted among a circle of close friends of like faith and conviction. This can sometimes benefit; knowing others share your hopes and are praying in your spiritual support.

The Retreat is for renewal and rededication to the Spirit. Christians will sometimes forget the Spirit indwells and cares and teaches and keeps us from spiritual harm. We will move through life and simply forget we have the constant companion within who is always willing to lend comfort when tasked. When that begins to happen in the life of the Christian, it is time to stop and take stock.

The Scriptures admonish each Christian to “examine yourself”. This examination is to be constant. Christians face the world’s experiences every day. Each day brings something new which can sometimes be a spiritual blessing, yet, many times can be spiritually taxing. The warfare is continual. Sometimes the R&R (rest and relaxation) is absolutely necessary.

Jesus told the people to “Come to me….and I will give you rest.” This is the goal of the Retreat. It is allowing Jesus to give you a rest from the cares of everyday life. It is the chance to explore your personal faith and relationship deeper and to replenish your spiritual ammunition to continue the “good fight”.

I slept well. I ate well. I went fishing and strolled in the park watching the birds play. I prayed and read and thought a great deal about life and worry. I was comforted. I am back, prepared to face what the Lord has determined I should face. It was a good Retreat.
