Friday 13th Is Over, But Are You Okay?

By Judy Ramsook
Jan. 15, 2006

With Friday 13th just ended, many superstitious persons among us are probably happy to have survived the day without any mishaps. I tuned in to the local evening news yesterday just to see if many odd things had indeed taken place, given the day and it’s significance.

It turned out that a few things did take place such as a trench being caved in while a worker was still there. Luckily his fellow workers acted quickly and he survived the mishap. I try not to be too superstitious, but even I was being careful as I made it through the day.

I made certain there were no obstacles in my path as I walked around the house, and was careful not to stumble along the stairs for fear of becoming a casualty of the Friday 13th spell. In addition, I also did not go out of my way to step under a ladder, just in case.

No matter how free of superstitious beliefs some of us may be, you never know when something of a questionable nature might occur. If and when it does, one may wonder such things as, why me or I already have so much bad luck.

The thing is, it might not be the bad luck that got to you. What it could be is your fear of it and what it represents. It’s that thing that dwells in your subconscious and come any given Friday 13th it quietly makes its departure from your subconscious to the rest of your thought processes.

You can be as careful as you can be and take all the necessary precautions to prevent any accidents from occurring on such a significant day, but once your fear has stored itself in your mind, it too is waiting for an opportunity.

An opportunity to show you that it is the fear itself that will cause some mishap to occur. Sometimes in order for something to happen, you have to believe in it. Similarly, if you believe in your fear of certain superstitions, eventually something will occur, because you, on some subconscious level, believe it will.

Even though the day is long over, what you can do the next time another Friday 13th rolls around is go about the business of the day as if it were any other day. This can be difficult to achieve especially in the workplace. No matter how hard you try to block out the day’s significance out of your mind, at least one of your co workers will mention something about it.

Then it all falls apart, for now not only is the word out, but it’s right there all around you. The best you can do is keep yourself busy. If you are fortunate enough to have a radio on your desk, turn it on and listen to some songs that will give your spirit a boost and before you know it, the day will be over.

A day you wanted to end the moment you became aware of its significance. If you are superstitious, and reading this, I hope you made it through yesterday or Friday 13th in one piece.
